This place has been around since I was a kid. I remember my mom taking us here a handful of times for icecream. Never really went back because I never really thought it was that good/worth the money. Well, it was my step son's bday and he wanted chocholate so I figured I'd give it a shot. Highly disappointed honestly. He got 10$ in chocholates, fine that's cool he was happy. We got some rock candy's. Those seem fine. I got a chocholate peanut butter frog it was ok. Ended up getting these chocholate disks with sprinkles and I always loved those and honestly. They tasted like chocholate that had been sitting in my gmas basement for years! I literally couldn't even eat one. Ended up spitting it out. Idk if they don't check their inventory or if it's the way they were made but it was definitely stale tasty chocholate with a funky after taste. I won't be back. No hard feelings there but I'll drive to the chocholate chisel before I come back for stale dog butt chocholate. Also, the choices are insanely limited. Like cool you have a bunch of milk chocholate shapes. It's all exactly the same. Those weren't even really good either but hey the kid was happy so can't complain there. 4/10*

Would love to give this place 5-stars because its sweets are unbelievably delicious and the store is so cute and charming! However, the customer service and overall experience was a 3-star, at best. The girls behind the counter were unfriendly, not helpful, and although we came in close to closing time, they seemed irritated about that. They also had turned off some machines (chocolate for dipping cones) and were literally microwaving fudge in front of us. They said I couldn’t have a dipped waffle cone because of this. They also acted as if we were a nuisance and had no customer service skills, nor just general people skills. I hope that’s not a true depiction of their service in-store during the day but I won’t be back because it was super uncomfortable and I don’t appreciate being glared because I am making you work to your allotted working hours. (The store closes at 9, we were there 15 minutes before then).

Transport yourself back to a simpler time and visit Beerntsen’s in Manitowoc. It was originally founded in 1932 by Joseph Beernsten and remain a family owned business until 2003. The new owners, Dean Schadrie and his family have a background in making chocolate and stated that they would keep it the exact same. I had not been here since I was probably in my early teens and 30 years later it was everything I remembered growing up. I was even able to get the same sundae, the Teddy Bear, that I got as a child, and it was EXACTLY as I had remembered. Even the menu was the same! They have 32 different sundae options for you to choose from. They also have a small lunch menu. Afterwards I had to get some chocolates and taffy. It was a wonderful experience and walk down memory lane. For more reviews, follow us on Instagram and Facebook @gbdiningdykes!

I grew up in the Manitowoc area. Beerrntsens has been a staple for generations in my family. Always at at Christmas we buy hundreds of dollars of chocolate. This year I was very disappointed in the fairy food/ angel food candy. It was so apparent that they coated it with a very thin layer of chocolate. Right when you bite into it you notice that they really are making this with a lot less chocolate. Both my mom and I noticed it right away. I called the store and the person answering the phone said it was not true. she was very rude and defensive. Then the owner jumped on the phone and he was immediately angry and defensive. He admitted that the now are using less because of different way the coat the candy. To my surprise he never thanked me for being a life long customer but said if you don't like it buy it go somewhere else. He did offer to give my money back further admitting that it is not was not what it used to be. I said no to wanting my money back. He then in anger hung up on me. So rude!!!!! I suspect he has been getting slammed by other long time customers saying the same thing. People don't like paying more for a substandard product. Then making excuses. I do not recommend going to Beernstens every again. They not only lost me and my family but I will tell everyone now not to go, instead of recommending like I used. I hurts when you used to be proud to tell people that they had to stop here. No...

I loved reading about the history of the shop. I am a chocolate lover and also love old buildings. The beautiful classic vintage aesthetic of the chocolate shop and cafe was charming and overall as a business adds so much to Manitowoc. I loved my ice cream sundae…there was a lot of variety to the menu. I only wish my sundae was served in a cool looking glass dish. I ordered the Cony Island sundae and fell in love with the delicious marshmallow topping!!!! As for the chocolate, it was good, however I sadly was disappointed in the salted dark chocolate candy, in my opinion there was way too much salt crystals on top and inside the chocolate piece. It could have just been that piece but I think it would be good if they added a little less salt so it adds to the chocolate instead of overpowers it. I am a lover of salted chocolates. Overall though I would recommend this shop. One thing I think would add to the experience is if you played some good classic oldies tunes in the background for some...
