I'm a big fan of Dutch Bros' coffee and the friendly energy of their baristas. Their drinks are consistently good, and the drive-thru experience is usually quick and efficient. However, I've noticed a recurring issue that significantly detracts from the overall positive experience: the excessive and sometimes awkward prompting for tips.
It seems that after every order, when the transaction is essentially complete (or even just finalized on the card reader), there's a very direct question or statement about leaving a tip. While I understand that tips are a vital part of service industry income, the constant and often pointed requests, especially after the purchase, can feel incredibly pushy and put customers on the spot.
Tipping, in my opinion, should be a genuinely voluntary act, a way for customers to show appreciation for excellent service if they choose to. When it becomes a direct solicitation, it shifts from an act of generosity to an obligation, creating an uncomfortable pressure point in an otherwise pleasant interaction.
I appreciate the hard work of the Dutch Bros team, but I'd strongly suggest reconsidering this approach to gratuity. Some of the long wait times others mention are probably partially due to this being a new location. On the app, I count 204 different drinks (not counting different sizes or customizations). I’ve always liked the drinks I’ve gotten from Dutch Bros (unless I did a customization that turned out to be a little too experimental).
