This place thinks they own the sidewalk & that I'm not allowed to walk my dog outside and look at the cats through the window. When they post on fb that they like people to look at the cats through the window. I have taken my dog on walks by here Tons of times and the employees would pick up the cats for me and my dog to look at through the window. I was walking my dog there last week and the owner lady. Came outside yelling at me that she was going to call the cops. So I told her to go ahead. Then the lady for real called the police on me and they gave me a peace disturbing charge, I was already almost all the way back home with my dog when the police pulled up on me all crazy because it's Maplewood and they had no one else to harrass on a Saturday at around 4pm and wouldn't listen to anything I said to them just because they wanted to call the cops for no reason. This is the most Ridiculous ticket I've ever gotten in my whole life. Th8s place is 100% awful & I don't recommend because the owner is absolutely rude & CRAZY to call the police on someone walking thier dog on a Saturday. I wasn't disturbing anyone's peace she disturbed my peace when she came outside yelling at me like an absolute nut.
*This part is an edit to reply to the foolish reply from the owner
I've lived in Maplewood since I was 12 years old, I didn't encourage my dog to jump on the window when she jumped on the window I took a picture but when I noticed the cat didn't like it I pulled her away from the window. If you wasn't there then you only know a 1 sided story of what actually happened that day. I have been by your cafe numerous times while walking my dog. & never had a problem like this before. You can't go off a 1 sided story and think you know what happened that day. Your employee came outside shouting at me so I was just supposed to say nothing and be yelled at. That's not even how life works if someone comes at someone being rude a person will be rude right back. I also didn't bang on any of your windows. I never have knocked on your windows when I stop there to walk my dog. I also was on my way leaving when she came out yelling at me because I did notice the kitty's wasn't in the mood to see my dog that day.
What wasn't right was her coming outside to yell at me instead of just say hey your dog is bothering the kitty's and I would have said yes I noticed and I'm taking her down the street. Im going to Definitely let the judge know when I go to court that your employee lied about me "banging" on your windows. I was leaving when she came out yelling at me, so to say I wasn't leaving is also a lie and I left right after that's why I was already 3 blocks away when the police came at me like I just robbed the place. I would never "bang" on the window only a nut would do something like that. I hope you have a video because it will prove I was actually leaving when she came outside yelling and see I never banged on the Cafe windows.
The ticket I received isn't a petty ticket. I might have to get a lawyer because your employee lied to the police about what really happened that day. & the police told me I can post on my social media about what happened that day. It's not a "vendetta" when I'm telling my followers on social media what happened to me and how I was wronged. Your staff member never told me "to move along" she came outside yelling at me and this is what she was screaming. "I'm calling the cops on you" she didn't come outside in a proper way at all. She was yelling like a crazy nut. She never asked me to leave. I told her to go ahead and call the cops but to make sure she calls the non emergency number to not waste their time. It seems to me you need to find a new staff member who doesn't lie about things that happen.
You don't own the sidewalk you have no right what so ever to tell me to walk a different path. Maybe you should move your cafe out to the country if you don't think people are allowed to be outside. You sound...
Read moreAlways an excellent experience every time I come! The coffee is wonderful and the treats are always changing and each time they seem to get better and better! They have rules, but they are for obvious reasons to ensure the happiness and safety of both the guests and the cats.
As far as the review goes from the woman complaining of the guy closing the door on her foot, I was there and he was incredibly apologetic. You have to sign a waiver before entering the cafe (the guest had not) and it will clearly state the rules of the lounge. They have rules for the doors where only one door may be open at one time and you should always ensure that the door is closed behind you before entering the lounge to ensure that the cats don't accidentally get out. You do not need a reservation to get a cup of coffee either! You are welcome to walk in and get coffee to go or to sit at the small bar and drink your cup of coffee!
I have been here both with reservations and without. They encourage making a reservation on their Facebook page and on their website because it allows them to reserve space for you in the lounge. If it was busy (like it was this past weekend during the Art Fair event) then there will be a longer wait to get into the lounge because those with reservations have priority. The time I went without a reservation, I only had to wait about 20 - 30 minutes to get in though and there is plenty of other things to do in the Maplewood area to pass time while waiting!
Overall, I only ever have wonderful things to say about Mauhaus! They have done such a fantastic job of helping cats get adopted and they have rules that help to protect the happiness and the safety of the cats who are at the cafe! The food is always wonderful and the staff are all very friendly and are always willing to help teach you about cats and to answer any questions you may have about the cats they have at the cafe! I will continue to keep going to this cafe and I hope some of the negative reviews on here won't deter you away from going! It really is an excellent spot and the rules and restrictions are all for the well-being of both...
Read moreI am sad that I have to edit my review that I left last week. This is the first time that I have to leave a review because of discrimination against autism. We went there 2 times before and everything was great. I really appreciated this place. Today, when we were there for about 10mins, Staff Cindy came to talk to my daughter about not chasing cat. I saw my daughter running for two steps and it was a little loud because she was wearing boots. I didn’t think she was chasing cat. Since Cindy seemed irritated, I told her that my daughter has autism and I was going to work with her to make sure she is good (I was already actually). So I started to follow my daughter around and teacher her how to pet and how to recognize cat’s emotions so that she knows which one she can play with. One minute later, manager came in and offered me to have my daughter to do coloring instead. I was shocked! I said she is not here to do coloring. And manager and Cindy started to point out how she was not complying the rules there, which both my daughter and I were not aware. It is heart wrenching to see that my daughter was denied a second chance to pet cat after first warning and immediately after I told them she has autism. This is the first ever time that myself and my daughter experienced autism diagnosis based discrimination. I am writing the facts here for you to decide if you want to bring your kids with autism there and for you to decide if a kid with autism should be given a second chance or not.
(She loved this place before. I asked her what she wants to do next Sunday. She said “no cat house”. I am surprised and heart breaking at the same time. As a mental health professional, this is the first I start to make sense the research data, which shows people with high functioning autism very high suicide rate, comparing to people with low functioning autism. The unseen glass between neurotypical and neurodiverse is so thick, and it hurts to try to break it. )
