Im not sure a 3 is fair as this is a take out review. I will start by saying I have eaten at zoeys many times in the past and it has always been exceptional. Yesterday I placed a carryout order for a large zoeys on new york thin at 315pm. I was told it would be ready at 415pm. I know you guys are always slammed so i didnt think that was any big deal. I arrived early and waited in my car and walked in at 310. My pizza was ready and when it was handed to me i knew it prooooobably had been ready a while as it had pretty well soaked through the box and the bottom of the box was pretty soggy but I kept my hopes high that maybe I was wrong and took it out to the car. I opened the lid and gave it a look. Looked good. Got a block down the road and went to pull a piece out (i was taking it 45 min away and was planning to have a piece or 2 on the drive and then save the rest for the superbowl the next day) and sure enough it was barely warm and the bottom was all soggy from sitting too long with the lid shut. I was so disappointed! I used to live in CR and zoeys was my favorite ZA stop and now that I live almost an hour away I only get to have it a time or two a year if I am lucky and this was the first I have gotten to have it in a couple years due to all kinds of health issues going on, so i was soooo sad that I didnt get to experience the Zoeys I have been craving for so long. The toppings were still good but that crust is what sets a zoeys pizza apart from everyone else so I was bummed. I would have brought it back but I have a neurological disorder that makes night driving impossible for me so I had to make it home before dark. I will still come back some day I hope, but I just hope you guys see this and let your gals know to be careful when giving out their pizza timings...
Read moreIf they could do gluten free pizza, I would give more stars.
We are used to Rosati's Pizza in Illinois where they have gluten free options, an outstanding sauce and great flavors with the perfect amount of cheese, toppings and sauce AND they know how to make a SUPER thin crust.
We have tried at least 7 different pizza joints so far this year after moving to IA. Most have been extremely disappointing. We were ready to give up.
Zoey's and Casy's gas station are the two top recommended places for pizza.
Many places we've tried have really thick and uneven crusts and almost no sauce or toppings so that the dough dominates the flavors. Typically these places call their pizza "artisan"
Zoey's is a good even pizza with an appropriate amount of sauce and toppings to balance flavors.
Zoey's uses a TON of cheese. So much so that it is really chewy like you just warmed up a brick of cheese and took a big bite. My husband loves that. I like enough to cover the pizza but not so thick.
I asked for half the regular amount of cheese and they happily accommodated. They WILL put less on if you ask. It is notable that the cheese does not leave it oily.
They put on more sauce than several others do thank goodness. The sausage has good flavor.
I am diabetic so I have to have minimal carbohydrates. We would order super thin crust at Rosati's and it would be SUPER thin. That means I can enjoy more with less carbohydrates. Unfortunately, the extra thin crust at Zoey's is like a regular thin and too thick for my taste.
Overall, I think they are far better than most...
Read moreI brought my son here for pizza on a nite my husband was gone as he isn't so much a fan of their "tomatoey" sauce, but we had loved it and their deep dish pizza. While we enjoyed it this time, I was surprised to discover I didn't love it like I had the first couple of times we went. The crust tasted flat and flavorless to me, like they'd forgotten to add the salt, and there wasn't enough red sauce to balance the deep dish crust and generous cheese portions for my taste. I didn't remember it that way from our first few visits, but we don't go out for pizza often, so maybe I didn't remember accurately? Our service was excellent though! It's an interesting spot, but short on a waiting area...and on a Saturday night, we did have to wait 20-30 min., so that can get interesting if others are waiting with you in the tight entry area. If getting the deep dish, it also might not hurt to bring a deck of cards or something to do as it takes quite a while to bake. They do have different crust options, for those who like theirs thin. All said and done, for me, I discovered that some other pizza places had bumped them out of my "personal favorite spot." I wouldn't refuse to go there, but given the choice for a special pizza outing, will likely go to another spot next time. At the same time, definitely worth a try, especially if you haven't been. It's...
