I lived in Marquette in the mid 1970's & earned myself a pasty addiction. I have been "pasty free" for 50 years but "Lawry's Pasty Shop" is located on hwy 41 in Marquette, Michigan. This is the real deal so I ordered a box of 8 and could only hope for fast delivery & quality pasty. I placed my order on Sunday & my order shipped on Monday and included a brown paper bag full of dry-ice to keep the pasty frozen during shipping. The pasties were still frozen so I cooked one of them at 375 for an hour and put the other 7 in my freezer.
The pasty that I put in the oven did not come out right. The crust was partially dried out and partly mushy. The filling did not cook evenly so I pitched it in the can.
I was going to request a refund but I was most likely just going to throw out the other 7 pasties and move on.
I mentioned this to my neighbor who claims to love pasty and grew up eating them as a child in the upper peninsula of Michigan.
The neighbor was beating on my door at 9:30 pm wanting to buy the remaining pasties & even offered to reimburse me for shipping.? I sent the neighbor away empty handed.
The next day I preheated the oven to 375 and cooked the frozen pasty for exactly one hour. The crust was golden brown and flaky. The red onions, rutabagas. meat & spices were perfect!
I have a theory as to what happened with the first pasty: The brown bag full of dry ice was open & some of the dry ice was loose in the shipping cooler. laying directly on one or more of the individually wrapped pasties causing freezer burn?? This is just a theory & I am only hoping the rest of them will be delicious. I am also planning to order again from "Lawry's Pasty Shop"....
Read moreWell for our first visit to the UP everyone told us "you have to get a pasty, they are amazing". Based on the reviews we read, Lawry's was supposedly the best the UP has to offer and place to go. When we entered the shop on a cold rainy day we expected good customer service. What we did get was a less than enthusiastic young man behind the counter. We reviewed the menu and placed our order. The server pulled these pasties out of a warmer box and dropped them in a bag. He did not ask if we were dining in or taking out (we were dining in). We were not asked if we want gravy or ketchup. No plates, knives or forks. We proceeded to sit at the table and pull out our first pasty which was the garden classic. When we bit into it and got mostly potatoes we got worried. Where are the vegetables? Next up was the classic 12 oz. pasty out of the bag.....wait, this is it??? When we bit into this mini calzone looking pasty all we noticed was the potato and onions.....very little meat. From images of traditional UP pastys online we expected chunks of juicy meat, potatoes, onions and carrots. What we got was dry shredded meat with mostly potatoes and onions. If this is the best the UP has to offer, it was a swing and a miss! Guess we will have to keep searching for what a good pasty is supposed to look and taste like. For now we walked away...
Read moreReceived frozen pasties as a gift from good friends. I found a problem and called about it. The first person I spoke with listened to me, and responded that the meat used was pork button. My complaint was that the meat was in very large chunks and neither of us we able to cut them, much less chew them. He then called someone else to the phone and she told me the meat was beef which they received in large batches, then put through a grinder and could not understand how that had happened. She explained that her boss was out of town, but he or she would definitely call on Monday. Well, it has now been nearly two weeks, and I still have not heard. It is sad how so called customer service appears to be a thing of the past. I did not want my friends to know. This was such a lovely gift from them, one they could I'll afford. I do not want them to know it was so disappointing. As a former Michiganer i have always loved...
