It is not an economy lunch place, neither very expensive. They have a nice terrace a general theme of sea-side. However, that is all they have. If you are there for more ie. lunch or dinner, it may become a nightmare even the easiest orders.
It was a huge disappointment. Even though google reviews showed 3.8 stars (as of April 18th, 2023), we said let’s give it a chance (as a 6 people group). I guess in a way we deserved what was about to come for not taking google reviews serious. We waited 20 minutes for ordering, another 30 minutes for receiving it with forgotten sides and mixed up orders etc. This is OK though, and understandable, even though there were only two more tables (both already served), it might be understaffed temporarily etc. I did not give two stars for this. I gave two stars because of the super rude behavior of the waitress who was taking care of our table (No name tags used, so I am not sure about the name. According to the receipt it is Maggie, but we were 6 people, not 3 people as it is indicated at the receipt. So everything was unusual at this place).
I ordered a burger without bacon and a plate of fried oysters. I was the only one with a burger plate and an oysters plate -difficult to confuse. I received my burger with bacon and a fried oyster inside it. I explained the waitress that I cannot eat bacon that is why I ordered my burger strictly without bacon. She said it was a mix-up and she would bring my order right away. In a few minutes or so, she brings a burger plate. I am happy to start eating finally after 50+ minutes. Just to make sure I ask for reassurance that the burger is not the same burger plate with bacons removed from it, and she confirms that it is a new plate. I thank her and at about the take my first bite, I realize that there are two holes of the chopstick that holds the burger buns together. Then, I asked her again, and she said “Oo sorry, I did not pay attention to you when you asked me first time. Maybe, it is the same plate. But it was not my mistake I put it into the receipt, but they prepared it wrong at the kitchen”. I was super surprised how easily she can lie to my face and blame the others instead of apologizing to accommodate the client, in the end she is the one who is serving the food you depend on her judgements about what you are eating. It could’ve been that I would’ve not realized the second pinch at the bun or could’ve had a serious allergy for something. Her excuse was totally out of limits and blaming her coworkers that are behind at the kitchen was even worse.
Anyway, I tried to be calm and asked my friend to change my burger plate with his fish and chips. I was like “maybe she is having a tough day, for sure she did not want to lie, perhaps she was not really paying enough attention etc” self-calming basically. After a few minutes, the manager approaches to our table he says that he has been informed about the situation and he starts speaking about the oyster plate that never came in and that he would not charge us for the oysters plate order. I am shocked at that moment by realizing that either she lied to her manager too related to why there was a serious discussion at the table around the burger plate or the manager did not care about the real issue there. In either case, it was a huge mistake going there, and having our lunch destroyed by her (luckily without any life-threating health issues – at least until now within the first few hours after our lunch).
We still gave 25% tip to the restaurant because we did not want to punish other employees who are trying to do their best there. However, just beware that especially if you for some reason have any type of food restrictions or intolerance for your diet, you may end up not getting what you are paying for even worse a serious consequence with the neglection level at this restaurant. It was definitely not a nice experience...
Read moreWe went to HB for a date night to try a new place. The restaurant is accessed via the third floor of the Canopy Hotel, not next to Uniqlo. The restaurant is a very large space with an outside patio and patio and bar. The patio had a very large and loud music machine playing great music from the 80s -90s, but was so loud there was no way to enjoy ourselves for dinner. We were also told the music couldn't be turned down even though the patio was virtually empty.
When we sat down inside, we were met by a friendly waiter. He took our drink orders, a diet coke and one of their signature margarita drinks. Even though I didn't have a stopwatch ticking, after about maybe 15 minutes, we could see the bar tender on his phone and what possibly could be our drinks sitting on the bar. The drinks eventually made their way, The margarita came in a highball type glass with lots of ice cubes and was basically a mango puree with a few alcohols mixed in it. It wasn't all that special.
Dinner was also ordered after the drinks came. The menu has a good selection of items, however HB is probably $7-$10 above what the entrees should be going for, they range from $38-$60 per dish. The appetizers were better priced and again good selection.
We ordered two starters, the grilled octopus and the biscuits with caviar. For our entree, we ordered the gumbo and the rockfish. When we ordered the biscuits and caviar, the waiter gave us the disclaimer that if we ordered this and didn't like it, we couldn't send it back...
We waited an unusually long time to get our food, again didn't have the stopwatch going but on a Saturday night with maybe 5 tables going, no one really eating on the patio that could be seen. after close to 25 minutes we had to call the manager over to explain the situation. She was apologetic and did comp drinks. Not long after the starters came.
Both the octopus and the biscuits with caviar looked great. The octopus was delicious, grilled just right and not rubbery, great sauce and the sweet potato was overcooked just right to get that soft carmelization. The biscuits came out in a little wooden chest on rocksalt. An individual mini portion of four. Unfortunately the little biscuit packed a flourly biscuit taste, couldn't even taste the caviar. IMHO, the caviar was very inexpensive, the kind you get on the all you can eat saladbar at The Chart House. The gold leaf mixed into it is a nice presentation and there was a third ingredient but couldn't taste it either because of the biscuit.
The rockfish was cooked perfectly and came on top of lentils and side of brocolini. The gumbo had good flavor, but not to sure how they start their rue to get the base but never tasted the nuttyness in the base. The okra to meat ratio also seemed to be imbalanced.
Overall, the staff was friendly, the space is very large, the music on the patio should be turned down to a more moderate level before 9pm to enjoy dinner, the kitchen needs to get the food...
Read moreI took my (quite aged) grandmother and great-aunt to this restaurant after not having seen them for two years due to COVID. We picked it because it was attached to their hotel (canopy by Hilton). We thought it would work out nicely because I was on a time crunch and there were no other people in the restaurant so we figured it would be speedy.
They sat us down with two menus for the three of us. The waiter came over to take our orders when we were ready and told us that we could not order from these menus, because it was not lunch anymore, but rather happy hour. He handed us the new menus which only had like three items available, none of which were the dishes we had hoped to eat. So right away it was unclear why were given the regular menus to begin with, and given time to peruse them, if we weren’t allowed to order from them.
My grandmother got her lemonade right away, which didn’t taste like lemonade. We figured we’d get our food quickly because we were the only customers but the restaurant was milling with 20 employees. We were mistaken. Half an hour later, and there was still no sign of our food. We asked one of the many employees how much longer our food would be. We weren’t upset that it wasn’t fast, but like I said we were on a tight timetable and so we needed an estimate so we could plan. A guy told us our food was ready and they were just waiting on my French fries.
This was a lie. Another half hour elapsed, and there was still no sign of our food at all. We asked about the food a couple more times, and every time we were once again gaslighted and told that it was imminent. We’re patient people, and we were also trying to help out a new (and apparently struggling) business, so we really gave them every opportunity, but at a certain point we had to leave, and so we did so still having never seen any sign of our food. On the way out we explained to the host what had happened. No apology, nothing, he just murmured something and pointedly avoided eye contact.
Honestly I don’t know what to think. It’s clear that they hadn’t even started preparing our food, but it’s not clear if the restaurant contained any food whatsoever. I’m not quite sure how a restaurant like this survives and stays in business in that is otherwise a very vibrant neighborhood. I’ve never experienced such appallingly bad service in my life. Honestly, the whole scene was rather creepy and surreal, between the gaslighting, the ageist disrespect to my grandmother and great-aunt, the millions of employees, and their total lack of social skills. And food.
(Update: it’s honestly insulting to all of us reviewers to see how, under the hundreds of reviews saying the exact same thing as me, they respond with an apology, and yet clearly nothing...
