Hunan Garden — Restaurant in Maryland

We ordered food today for the first time from Hunan Garden. We ordered 2 platters that come with an egg roll, fried rice, and ordered a side of dumplings. The total came to $39. We pick up the food and we got everything except the egg rolls and we found out they charged us $1extra for white rice. At $39 with tax the order was a rip off and way too expensive. We specifically ordered the platters and we were charged for the entrees and ended up with less food. In regards to the food The Szechuan beef was not worth the price. It came with more celery and carrots than beef. The beef was super sweet and not spicy at all. The sauce was thick on the top but runny and oily underneath. It tasted like they just plopped Orange chicken sauce on the beef and call it Szechuan beef. My wife ordered Orange chicken, the sauce was appropriate for her dish but the chicken wasn’t crispy, it was soggy, soft and gross. White rice was well white rice and the pork dumplings I would say were the best dish of them all. I am not sure why Hunan Garden has good reviews but one possibility is that there isn’t much competition here in Eldersburg. We use to live in Ellicott City and ordered from China Taste. The dinner special with detailed options and with an egg roll, soup and white or fried rice at no extra charge is a lot less than $15 and tastes 100X better than Hunan Garden. Next time we decide to have Chinese for dinner we’re driving to Ellicott City because sadly Eldersburg’s Chinese restaurants aren’t worth the money, time or the...

Best Chinese food in the region. I have had many dishes from this restaurant and liked everything that I had. The owners know their customers by name. Excellent service. My first choice go to when I want Chinese food. Unfortunately, they are closed on Monday's which forced me to make another choice this past Monday when I was craving Chinese. The other place cannot hold a candle to Hunan Garden. Portions are larger than any other Chinese carry out. They are a bit pricier but you do get a lot of food. There is a reason that Hunan Garden has the highest ratings in Eldersburg.

EDIT: I have been getting carry out and delivery from Hunan Garden for several years now and it has been by far the best Chinese restaurant in Eldersburg. However that has all recently changed. I am not sure what is going on, but it seems some of their products are different. Perhaps they are ordering from a different vendor?? The egg rolls used to be large and stuffed with meat and veggies; now they are smaller and have nothing but cabbage inside with little to no flavor. The spring rolls were crispy and crunchy veg on the inside, now the inside is mush. Crab Rangoons are smaller with very little filling. Very disappointed and will look for another Chinese carry out...

Pretty solid Chinese joint. It certainly is the best Chinese place in Eldersburg, but I laugh at those that claim it's the best place for "1000 miles". Many dishes I have tried are very Americanized with very salty and sugary sauces. The Hunan Chicken is pretty good, but don't expect the traditional dish. The hunan chicken here is very sweet and lacks vegetables. Chicken and beef and broccoli is pretty good. You can expect most of their dishes to have a nice smooth or more liquid sauce rather than the pasty corn starch heavy sauces of the more mediocre places in the area. The fried rice and noodles are pretty solid. The egg rolls taste pretty much like every other mediocre carryout joint I've ever tried. Bottom line is if you have an appreciation for the more authentic Chinese restaurants you find in California or New York, you may be a tad disappointed to find this place is not too far off from the mediocre Chinese places you would find in any other town that cater to the salty and sweet palettes of the US consumer.
