My wife and I went there for my birthday lunch and had a fantastic, first-time experience! I grew up in New York and, while maybe not an expert, I do think that I know what makes a good quality deli! in the spirit of putting the bottom line up front, this place is fantastic!!
We were immediately greeted by a friendly staff (Minnie) who was also our server and by the manager, Kevin. Minnie was attentive and helpful in going through the options on the menu. She helped us figure out what to order based on the types of deli meat that we like. While the sandwiches were being made, I had the opportunity to visit the pickle bar and take a look at all the awesome items in the desert case. I am a pickle lover and it is awesome having the availability of a pickle bar at my fingertips to go on the side or, on top, of the sandwich – nice touch.
The sandwiches were perfectly prepared and there was enough on the plate to easily last for another meal (by the way, they reheat quite well or you can just eat it cold). We both ordered pastrami, corned beef, and brisket and can say that it is really good! There are plenty of sandwiches available on the menu but you can certainly create one that suits your palate if you don't necessarily fancy any of the items listed. The house-made chips are excellent, the coleslaw is great, and the potato latke was delicious. We did have the opportunity to sample one of the desserts (the black and white cookie) and can say that they taste just as good as they look - fantastic!
This restaurant is a place that you would want to bring your friends and family to visit because I think everyone can find something they’d like. Also, there is plenty of seating available, so if you’re not in a hurry, I do suggest staying to enjoy your meal on-site (plus that way, you can enjoy more of the pickle bar!).
Of course, the food is quite tasty, but one of the best things about an excellent deli is not just the food, it’s the people. Everyone was friendly and welcoming - exactly how I was made to feel. All in all, everything was quite tasty and I will most certainly go back (in fact we plan to very soon). I am giving this a 5-star rating and recommend this place for sure. I can’t wait to try out more items...
Read moreThis is the fourth time we've ordered carryout, and the first time we placed our order on line through their website. First time we placed our order in person, and we phoned it in the other two times.
What they do well:
Everything is well prepared and delicious. Omelets are cooked to perfection and large. I like that you can build your own or modify their pre-assembled omelets. The side of home fries are sauteed well, but my personal preference is for crispier potatoes. My wife tried their latkes for the firsr time today and found them to be good but just average. Their hash is very tasty with a generous amount of their deli meat included; however, I would prefer that they chop up the meat. Have had both the corned beef & the brisket, but it doesn't quite eat like a hash with the large meat slices. Their breads are good & fresh. (We've had the plain bagels, rye and white bread.) The chicken pot pie is fabulous; however, be sure to ask for extra gravy which is especially helpful for reheating leftovers. We also purchased a sccop of chicken salad and a Reuben for lunch today. They look good, but we are having those for lunch and I'll have to update this review.
Where they need to improve:
Orders we've placed by phone & on line have had a few issues. On one of our chicken pot pie orders they forgot to include the extra gravy. Today's order was missing an omelet and two bagels. Fortunately, we checked our bags before we left. The order assembler missed putting them in the bag. Unfortunately, after we were home we discovered one of our coleslaw sides was missing, and the veggies we requested for the "build your own" omelet hadn't been added. Also, we paid extra for additional sausage which didn't make it into the omelet. Finally, I don't know if today was a fluke, but the side of home fries was much smaller than in previous orders.
Bottom-line, although their prices tend to be on the high side, the food is excellent, well prepared and generally large enough portions to get two servings from many of their dishes. They need to get better at not leaving items out of the order.
We highly recommend them, and normally I would have givem them 5 stars if not for the problems we have had with missing...
Read moreI was craving a Reuben, so I googled "Reuben" and this place popped up as #1. They either got good Reubens or a good SEO (or both). I had multiple doctor's appointments with a short time between, so we saw that it was a deli hoping we could just snag a quick bite.
Yes, this place is a deli, but it's also an ✨experience✨. We wanted to sit to eat and found out it has full table service. Our waitress, Lori, came over and she was the kindest woman I've ever met in my life. She asked if we liked Reubens, and I laughed because that's exactly why we were here. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and answered all of our questions. We apologized and let her know we were kind of in a hurry, but she was more than happy to get our ticket and boxes to us right away so we could bounce at a moment's notice.
When we first looked at the menu, we were kind of sticker shocked. $20+ for nearly everything on the menu. Being hungry, out of time, and already seated, we decided to order anyways. YOU WILL NOT REGRET SPENDING $20+ ON A SANDWICH HERE! If any place in the world SHOULD be charging $20+ for a sandwich, it's Mikey and Mel's!!!
OMG! it was the best Reuben I've ever had in my life. I was scarfing it down and passively scared because I won't be able to enjoy any other Reuben. I'll never be able to go back. I'm going to HAVE to come back here and order a $23 Reuben every time for the rest of my life! It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make, though. Even if I move to another country. I'll just have to fly back and get a Reuben from Mikey and Mel's.
While I was scarfing my sandwich, I looked over at the table next to us and grew jealous that they had a plate of pickles. Why didn't I think about ordering a side of pickles? And as if God had heard me himself, he sent my angel, Lori, down from the heavens with a plate of pickles.
"Here's a free plate of pickles."
I've never been religious before, but this was divine intervention. I found God in this deli. We graciously accepted the pickles and they were delicious. I also had the potato salad which was fantastic.
Best Reuben I've ever had (and I've had a lot). Fantastic service. Amazing atmosphere. I will die for whoever Mikey and Mel are as well as...
