While growing up I always had a fondness for buffets and really enjoyed the selection of food. Everything from Old country buffet to the current Golden corral always made me happy when we would visit.
That excitement and enjoyment ended for me when I recently visited this location. Not only was the food old and had not been swapped out for some time but, I saw food preparation issues that would result in cross-contamination.
When my husband and I recently stopped to this location we were excited as we hadn't visited a Golden corral in almost a year. Prior to a year ago we would visit at least once per month normally at the Gastonia location but, occasionally at this one in Matthews. I've visited the location since the most recent remodel and kind of expected a similar experience. When we arrived at the location the issues started almost immediately when the staff was extremely unfriendly and seemed to be bothered by our arrival.
Absolutely nothing that we ate tasted quite alright everything was old and seasoned horribly. It was almost like the previous day's food had been returned and the items were most popular were completely allowed to run out and not refilled or refilled with such a small amount it was impossible to even enjoy before others had already scooped it up.
It is truly sad last really good buffet with quality food is Quincy's all the way in Monroe but we will continue to make a special trip at least monthly to enjoy quality food at a great price.
It's time for Golden corral to give it up and retire like Old...

Never found any food not at a good temp, which says alot considering its a difficult balance to keep enough of each individual food flowing without it being at holding temp too long. Staff was super friendly (always is), and wait staff specifically was superb at being within earshot anytime needed without hovering too much. My one critique for the restaurant would be for cashier members when ringing in customers, please at least offer/remind customer they have the option of taking out cash for tip. I could imagine not wanting to ask for gratuity to be added to the card automatically, but asking to give cash to allow tipping is not a rude or inappropriate way of 1. Reminding customers that tipping IS appropriate and encouraged....and 2. In todays mostly digital plastic world....customer may not have cash. I never do, and i always remember the second the wait staff appears at table side, and i end up going back to the register for cash. Furthermore, just to clarify a few things; Gratuity (to me) is not an option. Someone else performed a service for me, they arent my servant...therefore they deserve my gratitude in the form of compensation. How much.....that will depend on quality of service. Read moreAfter spending most of the day outside in the wind, I was more than ready to just relax and enjoy a really good hot meal, that I didn't have to cook or order on the phone; not to mention no dirty dishes either. I was not disappointed. A fantastic selection of salads, soups, beef, chicken, fish and pork. And plenty of vegetables as well. Let's not forget the desserts either. The restaurant itself was immaculate. The floors were constantly being swept and the tables and chairs were sanitized ASAP. The hoods on the buffet line were spotless. And there were plenty of disposable gloves and hand sanitizer that were used whenever you handled any of the spoons, ladles and tongs throughout the various buffet sections that you were availing yourself of. The pandemic in all of it's variations might have taken a rather severe toll on some dining establishments, but this particular Golden Corral seem to have weathered this pandemic quite well. The staff members were all unfailingly polite, professional and courteous. Our waitpersons name was Dunia and she was and absolute gem.
