Black Rock Pizza - Kihei — Restaurant in Maui

Beware!!! There hasn’t been a review in 2 months and today I found out why!! Horrible customer service and serious down grade in food quality. I once used to come here frequently as I live in Kihei, and now I will not go back again. This place used to be so great with the previous manager, I think his name was Robert?, but now it’s a free for all from employees who are eating the food instead of serving people and gone for great lengths of time to leave you wondering what they are doing back there when there are more employees in the building than there are customers. I drive by this establishment every day going to and from work and now understand why I have been seeing less and less and less people eating here and now it’s very apparent. I never write reviews and felt compelled to write this on all platforms I can to warm not only the community but tourists alike to save their time and money and go somewhere enjoyable with great service and better food. It is so sad for me to write this because I used to love coming here with my girlfriend and bringing our friends here. But now I am making it a point to tell everyone I once told to come here that the place is running into the ground and to keep your distance!! The photos are from waiting a very long time for service, simply a drink refill and to put food in, the second is where I was wondering where everyone was because there were like 10 employees and only 5 customers inside and no one was anywhere to be found, I found out when I was leaving that everyone was just hanging out outside. We decided to try out Black Rock for a pizza night during our Kihei vacay. We placed an online order which said it would be ready within 35 minutes; when we arrived, they had our food ready for us and were super friendly! It also looked like she was inspecting each of our menu items before giving them over to us. We got back home and dug into our Local boy pizza which was divine! There’s so many flavors going on, but it all works really well together. We also enjoyed the chicken pesto pizza rolls though we didn’t try the green sauce that they came with. You’re probably wondering what the 3 star review is for since I’ve described everything as being so tasty, and that came from dessert: the malasadas. We’ve been craving some since we arrived to Hawaii, and excitedly ordered them when we saw Black Rock made them. That was a big mistake. The first bite was tasty and seemed like it was going to be the perfect end to our meal…however, as I took a second bite, it seemed like there was some type of cheesy or doughy section that was pretty off putting. I tried to go to the other side of the donut and it had the same weird texture. Upon closer inspection, I realized they’d given us a pair of donuts that weren’t fully cooked. 🤢 that weird texture was dough that wasn’t finished cooking but they sold it to us anyway. Not only was that a gross end to our dinner, but it’s also really dangerous for me as I’m currently pregnant and can’t eat undercooked or uncooked food. For almost $15, you’d think they’d make 2 malasadas as close to perfect as possible.

READ THIS! Thank you server LIZ, server MARCUS, and manager ROBERT ! Reminded me of the pizza days growing up in NY, quality, atmosphere, just busy, fun, and smiles. PLEASE read this review all the way through, I will follow up; it was their day 4 of opening, to go, dine in; a perfect symphony of busy and fun atmosphere; it’s going to be voted the best in Maui. Remember, if food is great, it will take time! I’ve waited over an hour for food many times (Katz deli NYC, Joe’s pizza NYC, etc. Food made with LOVE, means people want it. It’s not a Maui thing, it’s an amazing food thing! They were so packed, on a wait, that’s a positive! Smiles all around, chefs, hostesses, servers all amazing. Sadly someone is trolling, since every interaction I had was positive. Again, LIZ, MARCUS, and manager ROBERT, outstanding. I can’t wait to eat here over and over. Homemade dough, bread, sauces (I’m a harsh critic); perfect pizza crust, and the cannoli brought me back to little Italy in NYC. Eat HERE! But be patient! Then go again.
