After a very disappointing fish taco experience last night at a nearby food truck, we had to visit South Maui Fish Company to renew our faith in fish tacos. Prayer answered.
Got there when it opened, and there was already a line 8 people deep. The food truck is inside the square of a retail plaza, so you have to enter a building to access it (FYI). It's not visible from the street. Just follow Google Maps, and enter the plaza through the parking lot.
The line moved quickly, and I got my food quickly after ordering. The gentleman running the window had such a great vibe!
Service was very personable and detailed. By the time we left, the line was 2x as long.
We got the Fish Tacos (fresh Mahi Mahi) and the Smoked Marlin Mac salad. Both were AWESOME. The corn tortillas for the fish tacos were grilled and had delicious char marks. The tortillas were sturdy enough to hold the contents, which is a huge plus. The slaw was delicious, had bits of pineapple. The fish itself was ONO! Fresh Mahi Mahi of the day. Perfect amount of sauce, and a tiny bit of heat that sneaks up on you but isn't overwhelming at all. It was a time-elapse experience, where new textures and layers of flavor blossom in your mouth every couple of seconds.
The smoked marlin mac salad was just as amazing. We both agreed it was the best take on mac salad we've had in years. There was no fishy taste, but instead, the marlin added a hint of oceany delight. The smoke flavor was a perfect complement to the fresh ocean nuance. Like the fish tacos, the mac salad blossomed with flavors and textures.
We'll be back...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI got here at 4:50pm thinking there would be a line for the 5pm open but no one around. They said line is crazy for lunch but not dinner. So come at 5! The ahi poke bowl was very good bc the texture is just different when it is fresh!
We got the half traditional (shoyu) & half spicy. The spicy has bits of jalapenos so it has a kick but not THAT spicy. The shoyu was a little salty so you actually need more than a little scoop of rice to eat with 1/2 lb of fish. The slaw had slices of pineapple and was yummy.ā¦on the less salty side.
The fish of the evening was marlin for the fish tacos. They give you a nice meaty piece of fish. Marlin seems like a steak of a fish and meaty but maybe on the drier side bc itās less oily. The slaw in the tacos had a little kick. Again, a little bit on the less salty sideā¦.maybe a bit bland?
I also got their crinkle chocolate cookies. They look like cookies but taste and have the texture of a brownie. It was fine but nothing mind blowing.
Come here for the poke! I preferred the shoyu or traditional more than the spicy bc of the flavor pairs well with rice and slaw. Sometimes you forget what fresh fish tastes like bc you arenāt used to eating it so fresh, even sashimi, in the Midwest.
Nice vibe with a few picnic tables. Some parking spots in the back and bathroom keys for those that need it. The Kava bar next door has live musician and singers come. People start to do traditional hula and the electric slide dance or something. Hawaiians are nice people....

Tried the fish tacos, which are served on corn tortillas with a pineapple and cabbage slaw. The fish has a sweet teriyaki style marinade.
At first glance I thought these tacos were sort of expensive for two tacos. But, when you see how much fish they give you itās actually a screaminā deal! The slaw is crunchy, sweet, and slightly creamy. The tortillas are chewy and warm. The fish is meaty, flaky, and extremely fresh!
Iād absolutely recommend for people to stop by and grab their next meal from South Maui Fish Co. to try this for yourselves!
One small thing Iād change if I were the company would be to turn their two fish filets they serve up in two tacos into three tacos. The two filets are slightly too big and would be better served on three tacos. It would make for a better fish to slaw ratio and allow you to taste more of the individual ingredients.
The service was quick and friendly. I appreciate you can see your order being thrown on the grill and everything is freshly prepared. Casual outdoor seating that gives some reprieve from the sun under umbrellas. Thereās nothing overdone here, just straightforward food thatās done with heart and an index for quality fish.
Itās good, like really...
