Stewz Burgers — Restaurant in Hawaii

The staff and chefs were uncaring and willing to risk their paying customers to get sick!!! I have celiac disease and went to the restaurant after seeing on their menu that they had a gluten free bun option. I let the waitress know and asked if their teriyaki or BBQ sauces are gluten free. She said she would check and proceeded to go to behind the bar alone, not once stepping in the kitchen, she waited a few minutes then returned to the table saying "yes all of our sauces are gluten free". I was shocked and confused, but I apprehensively ordered the Kihei burger (with BBQ sauce on a GF bun). She came back to check on the table a bit later and I realized there were onion rings on the burger and asked if they used a GF flour for those with celiac. She said "oh yes those are gluten free. They are beer battered... and I can't remember what all they use on them.... but they are gluten free." I said well how about we leave those off since you are unsure and onion rings and beer generally have wheat/barley in them. She said she would do so, then never went back to the kitchen, never changed the order on the computer and proceeded to go back to eating her homemade sandwich in a ziplock bag while watching the basketball game and talking to the guys at the bar. I felt extremely unconfortable and had a feeling that none of it would be gluten free. Other than the bun. So my husband went to the outdoor counter (connected to the kitchen) and asked them directly about the sauces and what all is gluten free since I am celiac. The chef said only the buns, none of the sauces or anything else is GF. But it was already too late and they had made the burgers. The chef then said he could "wipe off the sauces and it would be fine"..... also the onion rings were on the burger after I asked the waitress to make sure those were left off. The staff and chefs apparently have zero understanding or knowledge about celiac or other food allergies and don't care much if somebody was to get ill from their food. Please do not go here if you are actually expecting to get gluten free food when you order a gluten free bun. And the servers will apparently tell you things are gluten free even though they aren't. People with other food allergies please beware. I cannot express what a terrible experience this was and how uncaring everybody was and are willing to risk their paying customers...

After a long and raining drive to Kanaio and then ulupalakua to be disappointed that the original places we were planning to go was closed, we found stewz burgers and decided to give it a try. I’ve been craving a farm to table style burger and this placed satisfied that craving. After spending the afternoon on the east side, we made our way to the south side for these burgers. They did NOT disappoint. I ordered the Kula burger with sweet potato fries and it was so ono! They both go so well together and I’m not even a fan of sweet potato. We also ordered the double with cheddar cheese and it was also full of flavors. Usually when I eat at places like teddys bigger burgers or the likes of it, I feel disgustingly full afterwards. But over here I’m neither hungry or disgustingly full. I’m content. I was worried the reviews were just hyped up, but it’s legit. After eating I decided to google them and read their story. This spot is SO good!!! We had a craving for a good burger and this is minutes from our house. We hadn’t realized that we called to place our pick up order waaayy closer to closing time than we would normally have. The woman who answered the phone don’t even blink at taking the order so close to closing time. We drove over and the order was just packed and waiting. Super hot. Super fresh. The fries were crisp and perfect! What I hadn’t expected was how amazing that burger was. I ordered the Wailea which is mushroom and Swiss with grilled onion and Mayo. The burger was perfectly cooked, excellent Maui beef patty! The ingredients are high quality and perfectly proportioned. The bun was a big part with this burger, light and soft but with great integrity. Over all it was a perfect burger and fry experience and now that I’ve been, we will be returning frequently!
