I went to Alicia's Su Cocina for breakfast, it is located on 10th Street a block south of Pecan. It was recommended to me by a friend of mine for lunch, but I thought I would give it a try for breakfast. As I walked in I noticed that the interior was pretty plain. No worry's, often it's the food that keeps people coming back again and again. My server Efrian was very friendly and his service was totally on point. He brought a bowl of warm salsa and crispy, baked flour tortillas. Honestly I was planning on asking if they were available, but it turned out I didn't have to. The Salsa was really delicious, one of the better salsas being served in McAllen. I ordered the huevos rancheros. The eggs are smothered in salsa atop lightly fried corn tortillas, and served with refried beans, cubed potatoes, and flour tortillas for $ 4.99. However, I was disappointed that the ranchero sauce was the same salsa that was given to me when I first sat down. To me, using the same salsa twice, is a major no - no, at least try and serve something similar to a traditional ranchero sauce. I will probably go back for lunch to try the Caldo my friend was raving about. I may go back for breakfast, but I won't be ordering the huevos...
Read moreWe’ve been here three times already and each time was excellent.
From their chips and salsa, to their pozole, to the enchiladas, it’s all superb.
I’ve concluded that the reason behind their success is the sazón, or seasoning.
Nothing disappoints in this respect.
The other not-so-secret to their success is their handmade tortillas. I set aside my love of the flour tortilla for the one of maíz made here. They have a peculiar taste which my boyfriend was able to discern in his enchilada plate even when the tortilla was smothered in sauce. They also use them in their chips or serve them up thick and hot wrapped up in foil to accompany your menudo or steak ranchero plate.
The ambiance is nice and fitting; Mexican paper cutouts adorn the otherwise dull and worn-looking building.
My boyfriend’s only complaint was the unrelenting audio-waterboarding of Luis Miguel songs played over the televisions. You can earn an honorary degree in Luis Miguel’s discography after one visit, which, for some, may be a benefit. I personally didn’t mind, but some diversity...
Read moreWonderful food. My husband's burrito was more than 16-in. long. He could only eat half. We weighed the other half when we got home and it was 1 lb.& 7.2 oz -- for a half! It was a special order and they exceeded his expectations. He said the shredded chicken was perfectly done. Beans and rice came with the burrito. Green sauce in little plastic containers was super tasty. Table salsa was some salty but very tasty; we ate 2 bowls with chips. My barbacoa plate was spectacular as well. Very yummy with fried tater squares, excellent beans, a handful of chopped cilantro and another of chopped onions (both fresh) with a half of juicy lime. Pretty much perfect except ... the tater squares were room temperature, we had to ask for napkins, tea refills and the check so did not feel our wait staff was very attentive. All staff we interacted with were nice tho. Not a new place but clean and roomy. We went late Saturday afternoon and it was full of patrons. This was our first time there and we would...
