The food was great, but the service was lacking when we got there. The first table we were sat at was way too cold. We were never greeter by our server, but asked the hostess if we could be moved after almost 5 minutes. We gladly waited for a booth to be cleaned. Our new server was obviously fairly new and overwhelmed. It took more than 5 minutes again to be greeted, another 2-3 for him to come back & take our drink order, & we went ahead & gave our food order.
We both worked in restaurants, so we noticed immediately that no manager had popped his/her head out yet. The table next to us asked the hostess to please so something because they had already told the server they were ready to pay but he was too overwhelmed to get their check. She offered the manager, but came back without one. The man stated again that he really needed to leave already & he was eventually taken care of by the server.
By now, the early evening rush was starting to show up. We still had no drinks(probably 5-10 mins after giving the order) and the manager was alternating between standing at the host stadium & glancing over all the guests to see what tables were empty so he could fill the seats, completely missing the guests at multiple tables needing service or even wondering why a table has had coasters, but no drinks. Finally our drinks arrived via a runner, with our appetizer (no plates) and we finally saw our server again. We mentioned a few things we would appreciate & most made it to us as our meal got there.
Mr. Manager is still looking over guests as the evening shift arrives & he can no fill more seats. At least twice he looked at me as I was sucking ice out of my empty glass, but seemed to not see me. Unbelievable. The cooks did not know what raw or straight horseradish was, eventhough our young server was able to assume the creamy variety they had was prepared. That was shocking for a steakhouse. Little details, but they add up.
Based off our training, we know that no new server will survive or thrive without backup at the beginning, even after training. It could be only a few extra hrs, days, or weeks. That extra guidance is the difference between someone who hated their restaurant experience & those who look back fondly on their time "working restaurant" or even work up to management one day. I believe our lackluster experience, for our 21st Anniversary, is all the responsibility of the...
Read moreI'm going to start off by saying that I think Longhorn steakhouse is really awesome. I've had amazing steaks while celebrating many special occasions at the Weslaco location. However, this location in Mcallen left much to be desired. I ordered my usual. I always get the Delmonico ribeye, grilled medium with a parmesean crust.. I've had this steak numerous times at the Weslaco location and it's always so buttery soft, tender, juicy and flavorful. This steak normally melts in my mouth. Well worth the $45.00. This time I sliced into it and proceeded to take a bite. I found myself chewing the same piece for what seemed an eternity. It was definitely not the steak I' love and have recommended many times to my friends. I continued to struggle and after a few pieces I did something I've never done before. I just simply stopped eating my steak. This Delmonico was served medium well. That alone is a crime that should be punishable by law. Our server who was subpar, seemed clueless and oblivious to the situation. How did he not find it strange that a big guy like me, who orders a 45.00 steak, simply pushes his plate forward leaving the steak mostly untouched and uneaten? How do you not address it? He didn't even ask if the steak was ok or even offer me a to go box for the 3/4 of a steak left. He never thought to inquire as to why I wasn't touching it. At this point I called the manager over to give him feedback. Which he did thank me for. However he did not apologize nor did he offer to correct the situation. Even when I compared my steak to someone else's at my table. She also ordered a medium steak. Upon comparing the two steaks anyone could clearly tell the difference. Her steak was perfect. I just gave up. I simply put my paper napkin on my plate and once again pushed my plate forward. There sat 3/4 of their top cut of meat, untouched and overcooked. I basically paid 45.00 plus tip to eat a side Ceasar salad and a small bowl of lobster chowder. I understand that they may be short staffed and that this may have been an isolated event. However the lack of empathy, lack of concern and apparent unwillingness to try to fix the situation has left me with a poor impression of this location. I'll stick with Weslaco. Those guys know how to cook a steak. Mcallen Longhorn Steakhouse you need to do...
Read moreI am afraid I must contradict my wife's ugly/bad review of our experience yesterday. Everything was wonderful and the waiter was absolutely cordial. Her current issue is that she has bad esophageal issues and when they act up, not only are they agitating and painful but she gets in an, in my opinion, unreasonably bad mood and quietly lashes out at what I thought was just me. Her bad review was completely inappropriate except she cannot take any spice at all with her esophageal issues and she asked the excellent waiter if the shrimp dish was spicy and he said it was not. She found them to be just spicy enough and could not eat them. Besides being at the brunt, or receiving end of her ill mood during this I guess we shall say, "illness," until it gets cleared up, I was the clear winner during and after this visit. The waiter was polite, appropriately friendly, and very professional, my Blue Moon and the specially cut orange slices at my request for it, were delicious. My Caesar salad was crispy and the dressing was exceedingly delicious, and my New York Strip was done perfectly as blue rare as I like it, then on top of it all, I do not like fried shrimp. Only cooked and cooled (cocktail), or grilled. I also do not like it when the tail shell is left on. But her shrimp dish was absolutely delicious. Not extremely spicy, but I noticed what she had an ill reaction to. Other than that, the coating on the obviously fresh and crispy shrimp was light, slightly crispy as well, and really tasty as a restaurant of this caliber should be expected to produce. And of course, no tail shells. I could only taste a few of them on the spot as the salad, beer, steak, and some of her delicious mashed potatoes placed me at my limit, but I re-heated the shrimp at home the next day in such a way that it reproduced the quality as closely to the way they were yesterday as much as possible. So my belly is quite pleased again today. My apologies for her unreasonably ill review from what she told me. We were a total party of eight. Six adults, and...
