My chief complaint regarding restaurants is salt as the flavor of the day. I prefer a sitdown service style place, however this cafeteria style won me over. The tableware is plastic and Styrofoam but truly soon forgotten as the food and personality are down-home-made-good and I felt very welcome. The family atmosphere and food made it a "worth the drive" experience for me. The flavors of the food stood out in that you could taste the difference between the porkchop and the mashed potatoes with gravy because the seasonings did not over power those flavors but accented and enhanced them. Although most of the entree' are fried there was not a lot of grease, and with the reasonable seasoning those with high blood pressure need not refrain. The diversity of seasons used were extraordinary such as the touch of crushed red peppers in the cabbage did not irritate my acid reflux as it was the cabbage that held the superior flavor... I had to ask about the content of the pepper as the hint was no more than a suggestion on the tongue. I enjoyed the porkchop, the catfish and a vegetable plate with 2 extra sides and spent less than $50 - yes I enjoyed evert bite! I spoke with several employees and customers with equal ease and zest regarding this hidden gem. I will be back!
In the following review it does not mention all of the wonderful food I had such as green beans, mashed potatoes w/gray, cornbread...
Read moreHad a taste for soul food and was in the Whitehaven area. Stopped here right at about 11:30a. Place was clean and food looked fresh. I ordered my vegetable plate. Portions were typical and I got a choice of bread. I ordered yams, mac and cheese, lime beans and an additional side : spaghetti. As the young lady was scooping my mac and cheese she had to fight strings of cheese as it looked soooo cheesy. I couldn't wait to eat. Once I was settled I jumped write in and was no longer excited about my meal. While, the spaghetti was saucy it was blah as if a can of off brand sauce was just poured over it. In addition, i only saw a speckle or two of meat. The yams had a weird taste that wasn't right. Now the mac and cheese, although not really soul BAKED mac and cheese was decent (which is why they even got a 2 star) and the Lima beans, while seasoned (more tasted like salt, pepper and red pepper flakes) they lacked the soul food taste I have has many many times eating these. The food experience won't make me rush back any time soon. The customer service was good though. No attitudes and even when I asked about prices, the information was gladly given. This is what got them the other star. This may be for someone else's taste buds but it surely...
Read moreWe have had sssssoooo many amazing experiences with Kountry Cooking, but the one that stands out the most for me is my father's repass. My father's funeral was the weekend of Easter and I unsuccessfully tried to get Kountry Cooking on the phone (did I mention it was Easter weekend) so a close family friend who owns and operates a catering service accepted the task to cater the repass. However, 2 days before the service, they canceled because they needed to prepare Easter Dinner for their own family. I understood, but I was devastated. I didn't know what to do. I kept say," There's no time to get someone else and then my thoughts immediately went back to my original choice. I stopped what I was doing, jumped in my car and drove to the Kountry Cooking. I told the first person I saw what I needed (He happened to be the owners son and he was so kind.) He said," let me get my Mom for you." She came out of the kitchen with such a calming spirit, took my order and the rest is history. Everything was superb! They left such an impression on our family, that people are still calling asking me for her information. Kountry Cooking, you-all made the hardest day of my life sssssoooo much better. Thanks sssssoooo much you from the Alexander/...
