Im so livid yall don't understand. So my fiance chose the dinner location for the night which was Mortimers on Perkins. We go in excited because it's my first time there and it will be the LAST TIME! We're seated immediately... great. Our waiter comes over with water and take the drink order. He comes back with that then I tell him the appetizer while I view the menu further. During this time I see him check on all his other tables. Ok fine but then my fiance try to get his attention twice, even reached out to tap him, and he acted as if he didn't feel that tap either so we could order the entrees. The whole time he took our order though he didn't seem interested in having a conversation with us at all. I bring it to my fiance attention and then he start to notice. The waiter places in the order checks on his other tables again don't say anything to us period. We get the appetizer and the girl that delivered that didn't seem very interested to talk either.. (we asked her to tell the waiter we're ready to order because he never returned) mind you I just watched her deliver food to another table with smiles. Ok maybe the cook said something off in between this. No biggie. In the mean time the waiter walks past again about ten minutes later and guess what HE DON'T SAY ANYTHING AGAIN but checks on his other tables. The couple across from us notice it and was like wow. Do he not notice y'all. Of course you're going to notice the ONLY black couple in your section. Then my fiance ask him for a refill for me because he still hadnt did that either. He walks off comes back to check on the other tables... guess what NO REFILL. At this point I just ask for the check for the items we had which was tea and spinach dip totaling $16 something. He asked what was wrong. What do you think wrong? You see all your other tables but the black people table and you ask what's the problem. YOU'RE THE PROBLEM. You clearly had a problem waiting a black table. Like our money wasn't as good as the other individuals in the establishment. I really wanted to taste the chicken club burger I ordered and my fiance really wanted that Stuffed Burger but NEVER AGAIN. Im not saying the establishment is racist but THAT...
Read moreMy wife and I visited Mortimer's on a Monday night to take advantage of their prime rib special, priced at $29.95. We were looking forward to an affordable yet satisfying dinner out. Atmosphere and Service The restaurant occupies an older building that's been well-maintained over the years. Parking can be tight in the small asphalt lot directly adjacent to the restaurant, but there's additional gravel parking available across the street that seems adequate for most evenings. Upon entering, guests walk through the bar area before reaching the hostess station. Our server was the highlight of the evening—friendly, attentive, and professional despite being visibly busy with multiple tables. Her excellent service made the experience much more pleasant than it otherwise would have been. The Food The prime rib special includes a salad, one side dish, and rolls. We both selected loaded baked potatoes as our side, which were properly cooked and well-prepared. The salad, though slightly watery, was fresh with flavorful dressing options. The dinner rolls were a nice touch. Unfortunately, the prime rib itself was disappointing. Despite ordering medium rare, both portions arrived with very little pink and were noticeably overcooked. The meat wasn't tough, but it lacked the tenderness you'd expect from quality prime rib. Most concerning was the excessive saltiness—the meat was so overseasoned it was nearly inedible. I found that dipping it in sour cream from the baked potato made it tolerable, but certainly not enjoyable. The portion size was modest but reasonable for the price point. Overall Experience While our server's excellent service prevented the evening from being a complete disappointment, the quality of the main course left much to be desired. I ended up leaving most of the prime rib untouched. I won't be returning to Mortimer's, and I'd strongly advise others to skip the prime rib special. However, given the pleasant atmosphere and quality service, other menu items might offer a better experience for future diners willing to give the...
Read moreMortimer's is a single unit family owned restaurant that occupies the stylish end of the casual dining domain. Established in 1981, occupying a converted residential property on N. Perkins between Summer and Sam Cooper. The segmented dining room is attractive, comfy-cozy and projects a very appealing ambience. It remains a popular destination. I rate the food and service a solid B-B+ but you wouldn't have search the brush to find more generous fans. I should mention that excellent cocktails can be had from spacious bar at attractive prices. However, the real story and appeal of Mortimer's exists well beyond menu selections and standards. At the most basic level, it revolves around the confluence of familiarity and nostalgia. On a grander scale it revolves around the convergence of two Memphis legends. Longtime Memphis restaurateur (and principal co-founder of the Memphis PGA tournament) Vernon Bell and the Memphis subdivision, High Point Terrace. Now joined in geographic proximity. Both emerging on the Memphis scene '49-50. Both beloved Memphis treasures. Mr. Bell's legacy has for many years been carried on by his family. High Point, long the province of aspirational middle/upper middle class Memphians, continues to thrive, gloriously so. It's denizens representive of the clientele that Mr. Bell's restaurants most closely served. For many years and most notably at the Knickerbocker on Poplar and now at Mortimer's. Several generations of Memphians enjoy a fine meal and momentarily taste the delights of a bygone era when they visit this...
