Passing through Meridian, MS on at trip from Roanoke, ALA to Dallas, TX, we were very happy to find this true historic gem of a restaurant.
Although not quite as old as one of my favorite Lebanon, Ohio restaurants, (The Golden Lamb Restaurant and Hotel - Serving guests since 1803) Weidman's (since 1870) offers an extensive menu of fine food choices.
We arrived at 8:20pm and there was no rush on the part of the staff, even though they closed at 9:00pm. The manager stopped by twice to see how our meal was, and to chat.
Before I get to our appetizer, I’d be remiss in not mentioning the unique Peanut Butter Crocks that adorn the tables. Each table at Weidmann’s is set with a handmade crock and an assortment of crackers. The tradition dates back to the 1940’s, when there was a shortage of butter due to WWII. A guest mentioned to Henry Weidmann that peanut butter would be a good replacement to accompany the crackers. They have been a tradition since and they now have a local potter in Meridian making the crocks by hand. Of course, since they sell them, my wife had to have one !
We chose the Crab Cake for our appetizer and it is made fresh with Gulf crabmeat stacked atop a fried green tomato, with a wonderful remoulade sauce . It was uniquely outstanding !
For my entree, I had the Chicken Ya Ya. It consisted of Paneed chicken breast (hammered somewhat thin, coated with breadcrumbs and fried) topped with shrimp, applewood smoked bacon, spinach and mushrooms in a smoked gouda cream sauce. I could NOT stop eating it ! The more-that-generous side of Cheese Grits complimented it well.
My wife decided on the Gilled Salmon, which was brushed with olive oil, expertly prepared and was also very tasty. As to her side dish, I was fully engaged in my meal and cannot honestly tell you what she had.
Dessert, you say ? We went with the Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie and Weidmann’s Peanut Butter Pie. We were not disappointed, although the scale when we arrived home a week later, made us only slightly regret these, and many other food choices on this trip ! Looking back, dessert was no mistake here, since they were both outstanding in size, flavor and presentation.
At this point, all I can say ius “Quit reading this and go to Weidmann’s now !” Next time through Meridian, we’ll check out their Balcony Bar, where the full Weidmann’s dinner menu is...
Read moreI surprised my wife with dinner at Weidman's. We were on our way home from a meeting in Laurel. This would be her first trip and she absolutely loved the experience.
We always love to learn about the history of a place. I'm so glad that the new owners kept the nostalgia of the peanut butter and crackers served at the table. We decided that it would have been an amazing experience to have been able to enjoy the restaurant during its heyday when the original owners and their families ran it. The fresh cut flowers on every table is an exceptional touch. Our waiter was magnificent and completely on point every step of the way.
We enjoyed the fried green tomatoes with the 1870 sauce. The combination of the seafood, the sauce and the tomatoes complemented one another very well. It would be worth going back just for the appetizer.
For our entrees, she enjoyed the barbecue New Orleans shrimp with the Creole cabbage. I must say that the Creole cabbage had a very unique but desirable flavor. It tied together. The New Orleans style dish with a more southern Mississippi -style side.
I enjoyed the chicken Florentine with the Chipotle smashed sweet potatoes. I was unaware that it was possible to improve sweet potatoes. This pairing with the chicken Florentine completely changed the way I thought about sweet potatoes. This particular side is a little spicy but the compliment of the sweetness in the potato and the salty crunchy addition of the crumbled bacon, you will catch yourself eating your side dish more than you do your main dish. The main dish is a blackened chicken with a crawfish sauce and andouille sausage. The sauce itself just makes you want to use everything in your plate to soak it up.
My wife absolutely love the nostalgia of the restaurant. Relaxing and looking at the art was something you wouldn't expect in a small town. Mississippi restaurant. If you are one for imagination you might even find yourself trying to look into the past to see exactly the way the locals enjoyed this place back when it was going very strong. That's not to say that it isn't now, but we live in different times and Weidman's allows you to step back into time and not only taste history but a exquisite array of southern...
Read moreHorrible experience and below average to horrible food.
We had been trying to find a restaurant that was open in the area. Husband had been wanting to try this place for over a year now. So I agreed and so sorry I did. Ruined the day.
Our waitress was polite and friendly but either she was super busy or forgetful. We had to ask another waitress for utensils and napkins but that waitress only brought us napkins. We waited more for another waitress or our waitress. Finally after a few we got utensils. Then we didn't see our waitress again until she came to get the plates.
A lady stopped by to ask how things were when we got our fried green tomatoes which were good. We told her everything was find. She refilled our drinks. Later when things weren't fine, couldn't get her attention and she disappeared into the back.
I had ordered a burger which was bland and dry. My husband ordered a sandwich which was also bland and dry. We waited to catch the attention of waitress for some mayonnaise. They brought us one container of mayonnaise for both of us. We needed more.
While waiting on order, we ate a chip or two. Please stop making your own chips. That was awful. They were burnt flavored.
Husband hated his sandwich so bad he stopped eating it and told the waitress it was bad. She apologized and took the sandwich away. This is the first restaurant my husband has stopped eating what he ordered. My husband thought she was going to offer another option. Nope. She just came back with the check.
Then we sat with the check for what felt like an eternity before she came back to run our card.
Paid $42+ for a dry bland food and random service. Then I had to stop on the way home from some Pepto and ginger ale because I was about to be ill.
From other reviews I simply can't believe the quality of food and service we got. Our pre-Valentines...
