UPDATE: For some unexplainable reason, our visit to Best Hong Kong Dining last night was a horrible experience! This was our "go-to place" but the food served was dreadful! We ordered the roasted pork which was sloppily dropped off on a plate that was full of grease (see photo). The pork was dry, the pork skin was hard and not traditionally crispy, the taste was like it was seasoned with 5 spice and pepper only, and the meat was dry similar to how meat is when under a heat lamp for hours. The fish fillet with black bean sauce was okay but the fish was soggy like it was just defrosted. Our fried tofu with brown sauce was dry and lacked adequate sauce to accompany the tofu and veggies. Finally, and this may be trivial, but our Oolong tea had an unusual taste, maybe because it could have been a low-quality brand. We spoke to the manager about the roasted pork about the grease and she indicated that this was a sauce and was normal. I didn't want to argue with her but I have NEVER seen roasted pork with sauce poured onto it. It defeats the purpose of having crispy pork skin if you pour a liquid on it as it will make the skin soggy. I was raised on HK food and having someone explain to me with a straight face that the "sauce is normal" on roasted pork was almost unbelievable. Being diplomatic, I said, "the cook was just having a bad day." I will never dine there again.
I live in Surprise AZ and Best Hong Kong Dining restaurant is my primary "go to" place whenever I make a shopping run to Mesa for Asian food (Mekong Plaza and H Mart). This restaurant serves "authentic" Hong Kong style food which is quite hard to find in Arizona. They don't serve dim sum, but they have roasted duck, pork and char siu. Additionally, they have a fish tank with live tilapia for those wanting it freshly prepared and cooked. One of my favorite...
Read moreAfter finding out my last favorite oriental restaurant doubled their prices and halved their portions since Covid hit, I needed a new place. This one was recommended to me so I took a chance. It was a pleasant surprise. When my companion and I arrived around noon, there were 3 people in line for takeout and no one in the dining room. We had our pick and sat smack in the middle. I ordered spring rolls, Kung Pao Chicken and a Corona, while she ordered Shrimp Egg Fu Yung and tea. The rolls, rice, tea and beer came out within a couple of minutes, the rest was on our table in another 5. I am sure it was because we were the only people there at the time. We watched as more people trickled in while we ate. The spring rolls were good, not too greasy and very yummy after dipping into the sweet and sour sauce they came with. The Chicken came out next. The peanuts were sprinkled on top, not cooked with the tender/crunchy onions, green peppers and tomatoes, but that was okay. The spiciness was just warm enough for me, allowing the flavor of the vegetables to come through the flavor of the sauce. Because the peppers in the dish were chopped not too fine, I was able to scoot them to the side of the plate and enjoy the rest. The chicken was tender and in decent sized chunks. Then the Egg Fu Yung arrived... dang. As you can see, the three rather large portions came stuffed full of shrimp. This is a real deal for $10. Of course we took the leftovers home. Our waitress offered to give us extra sticky rice, but we declined knowing there was plenty left on the table to go with both of our doggy bags. By the time we were done, the place was almost full... with families, couples and singles. Our tab was just under 40$, definitely a good value for the money. I am definitely adding the place to my rotation list for...
Read moreIt was our 1st time here. We decided to come in for dinner. Everything that we ordered was very good in texture and flavor. The roast pork. The skin was very crispy. The meat was juicy and tasted "fresh". The layers of meat and fat were perfectly balanced. The roast duck. There was hardly any fat between the skin and meat. The meat was still juicy. It was seasoned perfectly balanced with all of the different spices. BBQ pork. It was so good by itself. We took some home to put it in our own fried rice later. Combination chow fun is one of my husband's favorites. He really liked how they cooked it here. I really liked the well balanced flavor. The dish came out steaming hot but, yet, the veggies were still crunchy. Combination tofu. This dish had everything that we both like. We don't know if they make their own tofu or not but it tasted better than in some restaurants that we had been to. Deep fried crispy dough sticks. I have eaten this in Houston, Flushing, Garden Grove (CA) and here in AZ. But nothing reminded me of my childhood like tonight; when I ate it at the restaurant it reminded me of how my granddad used to make it for us. Perfectly crispy - airy - light in flavor and in its dough. The care from the restaurant staff was wonderful. We are planning to come back soon to order some dishes for...
