UPDATE IMPROVEMENT!!!! This Spring I started the semester and it seems some attitude have changes, and people have been more helpful. Public safety has been exceptional. Advisement and financial aide this winter worked hard and maintained a good, positive attitude despite the wait times. Tutoring has been positive. I haven't had the opportunity to visit the other departments yet. Overall I raised my three stars to four. Keep up the good work MCC!
Mesa Community College Is a pretty good school. There are areas where I would rate it five stars, and other areas where I would give the college one -to- two stars.
The Instructors: Four stars
The instructors for the most part are awesome. You should really do a little research on the instructor for a class prior to the semester. I generally find that the teachers are helpful, and fair. Most are willing to help you successed, as long as they see you putting an effort. On the other hand, I have had a couple teachers that were terrible, and you spend the semester cursing them privately cause the seem to live for crushing dreams. I would say this is a rare, but their are instructors like that.
Advising/financial aide/ Disability/ student life One star My experiences with the advising, financial aide, Disability, and Student Life have been sub par. I found no help, with advising. I was literally told to take classes I didn't need. I did my own research, and learned how to use the student center online. The progress report was curcial in finding what I needed, also the wedsite for degrees and programs also helpped.
Financial Aide was horrible, the individuals lacked professionalism, and didn't seem to have a clue. Literally went to them five times over the summer to make sure paper work was in order( i already completed my Fasfa early). They focused on pointing fingers at other individuals, and not solving the problem. I experienced them losing paperwork. Always keep copies of all the paperwork, and jot down the names of previous individual who have "helpped" you.
Disability was rude, and didn't care. I was stuck borrowing a wheelchair for a week. On a Friday afternoon I went out to where my car was parked, and called them to pick up the wheel chair I borrowed. The girl was rude and told me I had to come back across campus because, " she couldn't help me nor could she find someone to pick up the wheelchair". Asu's disability actual has golf carts where people who have injuries, or conditions can catch a ride to class. Mesa Community College has plenty of carts, but no one helpping injured people get around campus.
Student Life was ok, but seemed to be a clic. Honor's society was a joke, Twice in one week they let me down. Forgot to notify a teacher to be recognized, and changed parameters on a subject without notification. For a group that are suppose to be above the cut, they also display lack of professionalism.
Tutoring Five Stars My experiences here are great. The Math tutoring everyone was helpful and wanted to see you successed. There were patient and explained concepts, and were sincere. I stopped by to thank them for their help, and told my end grade (A). they were encouraged.
Overall my experiences:
If you attend this school you will need to take initive to get any help or paper work needed my Financial aide.
Advising is a joke.
Disability in humane
Academic society is incompetent
Tutoring Awesome
Instructors are helpful, and encouraging for the most part, but check each teacher out before...
Read moreMaybe I'm spoiled because I come from New England where at colleges we are treated like respectful human beings that are PAYING GOOD MONEY TO GO THERE, but this is the second school in AZ I've dealt with that has been absolutely horrible. Need to call the school? Better put aside at least 3 hours JUST to talk to someone. Need to email someone? Don't expect a response until 3 weeks later -- and their answer doesn't even help. Need help on their website? Well sounds like you're screwed. When you do finally get a hold of anybody, they are of absolute NO help whatsoever, if I haven't mentioned that already. Oh also I've been trying to enroll for classes for 3 months (and I'm not new to college so I know how this works) and I still haven't talked to an advisor, financial aid, anybody. And that is with me pushing to talk to someone every other day. I should also mention that a staff member argued with me for over an hour right at the main counter, to the point where people were staring, until she figured out that I was actually right but then didn't want to swallow her pride and do it my way instead she sent me off to come back another day so she didn't have to deal with me. That was pretty unprofessional and I haven't gone back in almost a month because I don't want to see her there again. Most disorganized, careless school I have ever dealt with. The staff here makes it obvious that they don't care about their students or the fact that many of us pay out of pocket to do this. I wish I could do a review on the actual classes and whatnot, but I cannot, because I keep being pushed off and treated poorly. If they can't make any money off of me right away, they'll just move on to the easier person and take theirs first. I'm still going to try at least one semester before I go elsewhere since I'm knee deep into this anyway and that I already wasted all this time on it, and I think I'm close to the end for real this time, and hopefully my opinion of the school will change for the better once I'm in the system and actually taking classes. I'll update my review once I do that. In short, if you're an impatient person with a short fuse, run away now because you'll blow up over and over again trying to deal with these people. I have never been treated so poorly at a school before. For this experience I had, I should earn a...
Read moreThe college itself is nice and is a great campus for students. There also are some amazing professors that I met during my time here that really made it special. NOW THE ISSUES.
They have the worst administration Iâve ever experienced. To start off their website barely ever works and doesnât even allow you to change things like your mailing address to be the same as your home one. Then when you call to get help with this you usually have to sit on hold for hours at a time. Also, one semester my advisor was gone on medical leave and I had no one to help me while she was gone. I had contacted the advisor they were supposed to have fill in but got no responses or help. The university also has no way for a student to complain about this or get help so I was left without a degree progress plan for almost two semesters. Even when my advisor was working, she would never once reach out to me or update my report unless I had requested and oftentimes would take weeks to respond.
Also their veteran services department is horrible and has no clue what theyâre doing. They constantly will not submit benefits on time. There was 2 semesters in a row that I had to call them later on in the semester to make them certify the benefits I submitted months earlier. They also told me I had to sign a form that couldnât be emailed, so I came into their office just to wait for 30 minutes and they didnât even know where the âformâ was. Turns out I never needed it in the first place and it was an employees mistake. Of course, all you get for wasted time and stress is an âIâm sorryâ.
Overall, coming from a bigger university to pursue any additional associates, I really did love the feel of MCC campus. It was very close to a major university with a more homie vibe. I really wish the employees that worked here were better and their systems were more established because they really fail students. From their Enrollment, Veteran and Financial Services to their Advisors, it just seems like they are severely understaffed and undertrained. Thereâs never not a headache from a mistake or lack of effort on their end. Mesa Community College seems like their goal is to collect students money and thatâs it. They make no real attempts to guide or help the students through their time at...
