I never get sushi for lunch... but today I got sushi for lunch. {rant}However, what I really want to talk about was how Yelp directions, a-la Google maps, decided to route me around the entire Wal-Mart parking lot, subjecting me to untold peril at the hands of amateur roll-back seekers and creatively bespectacled geriatrics whose forte would be anything but vehicular-centric.{/rant}
The place was suspiciously empty upon arrival, which always makes me a little antsy. Are there no customers because the quality is lacking, or are the previous occupants of my current seat deceased, stacked neatly in the walk in freezer? My fears eased after whipping out my scorpion light while inconspicuously spraying luminol. After fanning away the ammonium carbonate smell, I was ready to order, and order I did.
Playing it safe, I went with the Baja roll, because it had like double tuna and was adorned with crispy tortilla strips... much like a chicken tortilla soup, without the mock poultry or intensely painful mouth blisters. I initially thought it was drizzled with cilantro aioli, which I mentioned several times to the chef in an attempt to win him over with my nutritive know-how... only to be corrected that it was indeed a jalapeno vinaigrette. "Ah, but of course! Much like its distant cousin, the aioli", I shot back, saving culinary face.
One order of the house edamame was appropriated, along with an iced tea, which must have been freshly brewed, given its strength. And the soybean pods were bathed in a piquant garlic sauce/spread/aioli which kept the Vampire rolls at bay.
The chef was quite friendly, stopping by the table for further banter, in which I found out that (a) he dabbles in cosmetology cut and coloring, (b) he has a fondness for a Hamlet quote, and (c) has conducted several experiments relating to food allergies. He is in the running for the most interesting sushi chef in the world.
He invited me back M-Th for 20% off rolls. At least I think he did... my mind was still pondering the imy...

Review: My family and I recently had the pleasure of dining at House Modern Sushi, located conveniently next to the AMC theater in Mesa, and I must say, it was an absolutely phenomenal experience! Right from the start, we were impressed by the cleanliness of the interior and the warm welcome we received, which set a fantastic tone for the evening.
The service at House Modern Sushi is genuinely outstanding. It's clear that this family-owned business puts a lot of heart into their service, ensuring every customer feels valued and well-cared for. Their attentiveness and friendly demeanor made our dining experience even more special.
Now, onto the main event - the sushi! Every single item we ordered was nothing short of incredible. The sushi rolls were fresh, expertly crafted, and presented beautifully. What really stood out was the generous portion size, which is a great value for the price. Each bite was a delightful explosion of flavors, clearly highlighting the quality of the ingredients used.
Comparatively, House Modern Sushi easily surpasses other local spots like RAW and Broker Sushi. There's just something about the way they prepare their dishes that makes their sushi stand out in a league of its own.
Without a doubt, House Modern Sushi has become our new go-to place for sushi in Mesa. Whether you're a sushi connoisseur or just looking for a delightful dining experience, I highly recommend visiting House Modern Sushi. It's more than just a meal; it's an experience that you'll want to return to...
Read moreHonestly just beyond disappointed. My partner and I went here last night; we showed up around 9pm (a full hour before close — we actually skipped our preferred spot because we specifically don’t like to be “those people” that show up within the last 30 minutes) and instantly we still felt like everyone working wanted us gone. The place was empty and looked clean so it’s not like they were swamped. They told us to sit wherever and the server we had wasn’t warm or friendly at all. I don’t even mind curt service, but she straight up made us feel like we were bothering them, it was strange. We ordered 2 rolls and I genuinely don’t know whether I completely read the ingredients wrong (???) or they messed up our order but the roll I got had spicy fish and sriracha on top and I know myself, I DON’T like spicy flavors on my sushi so I really just couldn’t eat it. I had a few pieces of the roll my partner got which had salmon and shrimp. They cooked the salmon but didn’t season it at all and the shrimp tasted OFF. Today my partner, who ate the majority of both rolls has a really upset stomach, and he’s the type to typically not get bothered at all with food. Overall, we left dissatisfied and feeling like we had just wasted $40. Would NOT recommend! It’s much further down the 60, but our preferred spot, Four Seasons, has never let us down and it reaffirmed that once you find a good spot,...
