When summer arrived, the thing I looked forward to most was walking to get Lemon ice from the little “shack” down the ‘Berg. They were a perfect mixture of sweet and tart and hit the spot every single time. I would make many trips there throughout each summer, often bringing friends with me. In adulthood, I introduced MANY out of town friends and family, all of whom stated they had never had any better! Now, every time I have a spoonful, the taste brings me straight back to my childhood. Thankfully, there is a newer DiCosmo’s located in Metuchen, allowing for a summer tradition to continue! I love that the DiCosmos legacy is continuing through another generation of the beautiful family that started over 100 years ago. There are now many more flavors to try, but the lemon will always bring me right back to my childhood in Elizabeth. I grew up eating Italian ice in New Jersey since I was a kid and recently came back to visit my grandparents who live in the area. I stopped by the Metuchen location on Tuesday and tried their lemon ice and I was blown away. Then I came back the following day and had the chocolate expresso and I was really really blown away. This is by far the best italian ice I had in my life. Customer service is amazing, the shop is locating in a great area of Metuchen and the ices are spectacular. If summer had a flavor, it would taste exactly like a DiCosmo’s Italian Ice — refreshing, bright, and totally addictive. I stopped by and tried a flavor that felt like lime met mint and had a baby made of magic. It was the perfect balance of tart, sweet, and cool — like a mojito without the hangover.

The texture is spot on: smooth, not gritty, and it melts just right on your tongue. You can tell this is a family-run spot with real love in every scoop.
