I visited the Metuchen Diner with my dad on Thursday, March 27, and we both greatly enjoyed the experience. We were slightly worried about a lunch rush, going around noon (11:30 to be more precise), but the restaurant was spacious and not overly crowded. Parking is normally difficult with its small lot, but there is ample additional parking in the back, and on the day we visited we had no problem finding a spot. The service was great and very quick, only taking about 15 minutes from ordering to get our food. Our server Mariola was especially kind and cheerful, asking about our day and giving us some menu recommendations! Both my dad and I ordered off of the lunch special menu, which provided great value, giving us a cup of soup, as well as a dessert with our orders at a flat price of $13.50 (not bad for the rising prices in food across the country). I ordered the turkey Reuben, and my dad opted for the hickory chicken sandwich. They also have a set menu for seniors which offers the same deals as the lunch menu and is a nice option for older customers. I got Matzo Ball soup to start, and my dad chose split peas; both were good. The matzo ball was on the denser and drier side of the matzah ball soups I've had. Overall, the food was good, nothing exceptional, but very satisfactory and enjoyable. The portions, even for a lunch menu, were generous, and we both found ourselves taking home the rest of our meals. The coleslaw in the turkey Reuben instead of the traditional sauerkraut was light and refreshing. The diner was lively and very clean. The booth seating was comfortable (there is a good mixture of booths and tables throughout the restaurant), and we found it to be a nice place to talk and catch up. If you are in the area and in the mood for classic and affordable diner food, I recommend checking out the...
Read moreI visited the Metuchen Diner on Wednesday, October 30 at around 1:00 p.m. and had a great experience. The diner, which was once known as the “Duchess Diner,” is located on Route 27 at the corner of Lake Avenue and Middlesex Avenue, making it easily accessible to customers. The diner also has a large lot that extends around the back, ensuring that patrons can find suitable parking. I was served by Sue who was great. She was kind, considerate, and offered timely service. She was especially respectful to the lady at the table, who she called “darling” and “my lady.” I ordered the All American special, which included two scrambled eggs, French toast, pancakes, Taylor ham, bacon, and sausage with a glass of orange juice, which took about 20 minutes. The meal was delicious and economical given current inflation levels, costing only $13.95. I particularly enjoyed the pancakes, which were especially fluffy. In addition to the food, the dining environment was also clean and pleasant. The diner featured hardwood floors, laminate tables, and had a bright, but warm ambiance. We sat at a very comfortable booth and were serenaded by 1970s music, including Linda Ronstadt. During my time of visit, the diner was around half-full (30 or so patrons). The diner is also great for children, featuring kid’s breakfast and lunch menus, with meals costing between $7 - $8. Overall, I had a great time at the Metuchen diner and hope to...
Read moreOnce we entered the door we immediately experienced a throwback to a diner in a bygone time. It was a pleasure walking into a warm and welcoming restaurant. We were greeted by our server that immediately answered a few questions about the menu options. We ordered the travelers and the Tel Aviv omelettes (both with rye toast and crispy home fries which were very good) along with a side order of corned beef hash. Now I never thought of ever having corned beef and pastrami in an omelette, but I now know that it is a great combination that should be enjoyed by everyone. It had copious amounts of that delicious deli meat along with an abundance of Swiss cheese. It was so overstuffed that I could only eat about a third of it. The same could be said for the travelers, it too was overstuffed. Since these omelettes were so huge, we took home about 90% of the corned beef hash (we just wanted to try it anyway). We also took our omelettes home that we ate for the next 2 days (that’s a budget saver). Just want to mention that the coffee was rich, dark and delicious. Lastly, I want to compliment our server who was not only very pleasant, but on top of ensuring that we were enjoying our breakfast. A nice surprise on a weekend day that happened by accident, wasn’t even on our radar as our original plans didn’t work out. Highly recommend, at least for breakfast, but based on our experience, I would give it a try for...
