I’m a big foodie and I’ve been a vegan for about 2 years now and I’ve been experiencing different vegan restaurants and cuisine. Some place were amazing and others missed the mark completely. In my visit to Mazu I got the Guabao: A steamed bun with five spice braised tofu, mustard greens, cilantro, and peanut powder and Fattoush: Falafel balls served on chopped salad with sev, tahini, mint, and sumac (GF). The presentation was beautiful and appetizing but the reality was unfortunately looks can be deceiving and in this case it absolutely was. The menu is inspired by diverse backgrounds, including Taiwanese, Israeli-Palestinian, and other cuisines. But what it’s not inspired by or infused with is flavor, seasonings or spice. The Guabao where was the five spice? The only thing good about this dish was the pickled radish’s which they only served 4 lil slices of smh. The Fattoush was also flavorless, gritty and dry and the “salad” it was served on top of was basically the same how does that happen. The tahini had no flavor the whole experience was unfortunately lackluster. I was so excited and ended up so disappointed. I came from out of town to experience this restaurant, the customer service was good and had more seasoning than the food. On a positive note the Mango Lassi was delicious...

MAZU: Where Flavor Takes the Spotlight

Stepping into MAZU is like entering a culinary theater where every dish deserves a standing ovation. From the zesty Hummus and Falafel Platter to the umami-packed Yansu Mushrooms, each plate is a masterclass in flavor choreography. The Chocolate Pudding? A sweet sonnet. The Masala Chaat? A vegetarian revelation that could convert the staunchest carnivore (me).

And the staff? Total pros — the kind of effortlessly cool, wildly attentive crew that makes you feel like a beloved regular even if it’s your first time.

MAZU doesn't just serve meals; it curates experiences that linger on your palate and in your memories. In a world of culinary understudies, MAZU is the headliner you didn't know you were...

Not being a vegan, I decided to start slow--just lunch with a couple reasonably-priced street eats to-go. WOW! The Guabao and Fattoush were definitely an amazing introduction. An overall tasty first run at Mazu; knowing the coast is clear, I will bring my vegan-averse husband next time. How wonderful to have a new dining option in YS. So glad you're here Mazu! Stars lost for service & atmosphere because no one acknowledged this customer's arrival nor asked "dine-in or take-out?" (Maybe because it was a super busy lunch rush?--every table taken, except three outside in the too-hot sun). Also, a fellow diner with a nut sensitivity was not told her dish would be laden in nuts......

The atmosphere of this place is fairly typical of Yellow Springs. Which is a very good thing. The food was utterly delicious, and not a single thing served in their menu involves cruelty to animals. I do think it would be cool to have more animal rights messaging inside (just like with all the other posters advocating for very worthy movements). Also the menu says that the chaat has pomegranate but we didn't see any. No matter, it still tasted great. Maybe somebody the hours expand to normal restaurant hours once they get popular enough. Also we didn't see a place to leave a tip at the register so we left one at the table. I will be back for sure.
