I took a few days to compose myself before writing this review because I had a mix of emotions. This was very hard to write.
I visited ArtPie on Wed, April 17th 2024, and was excited to experience it after reading some positive reviews. The ambiance seemed quiet and charming, just what I was looking for. It is a beautiful space.
I parked next door and went in to ask if it was ok to park there. The man inside ArtPie, Nicolas, directed me to park across the street. When I asked about the wifi, Nicholas mentioned they were having issues with it and were working to resolve it with their provider, AT&T. I said ok. After I moved my car and came back, I sat down and ordered tea. I started to chat with him and it was very pleasant. I started to get comfortable.
After a while, another woman comes in talking about cats and the owner, a man, comes out and starts speaking to her. He says hi to me in passing. A little more time passes and two more women come in. They say hello and Nicolas goes to take their order and the owner comes out again and chats them up. One of the women starts talking about how she's having issues with the wifi. I was going to speak up to tell her there's no wifi, as I was told, but something said to wait and see. Sure enough Nicolas goes over to her and says something low in Spanish and connects her to the internet. Two more people come in and the owner goes and chats with them as well.
I ask Nicolas if the internet was back up and he says "oh yeah it just got back up but it has a new password that I have to get from the owner". A few minutes later he tells me that he's going to send the owner to me. I was going to leave but decided to wait and see. He goes and speaks to the owner. Despite being assured the owner would assist me, I was overlooked as he tended to other customers, leaving me feeling disregarded. Nicolas asked me several times if I was ok and implied that I wouldn't leave a tip when I paid for my check, acting overly surprised when I did.
Two observations left me disheartened: the owner chatted with everyone except for me and other people got access to the wifi and I was lied to about it. My only conclusion is that I was not really welcome there and that sullied my entire experience. I ordered a ham and cheese croissant and I couldn't even tell you what that tasted like. I was sad, angry and overall overwhelmed.
The only difference between me and everyone else was my race and I seemed to be the only non Spanish speaking person there. So I don't know what other conclusion I'm supposed to come to. I am still very much sad about my experience and I wish them luck with whoever they do want and welcome there. I will not...
