Holly's Restaurant & Pub — Restaurant in Michigan City

My friend kept suggesting we try this place but it didn’t look very inviting from the outside so I kept suggesting other places every time we went out. Then someone gave my husband and I a gift to go on a date and go out to eat. He then suggested Holly’s so I agreed.

We were seated and waited 30 minutes for someone to take our drink order. By the time they did, I had already decided on what I wanted to eat so I placed my food order as well. I had found a sandwich on the menu with avocado and I was eager to try it. However, when it arrived there was no avocado on it.

We tried to flag down the waitress but we couldn’t get her attention. Then we tried to wave down another employee walking by but they looked at us and then kept walking. So my husband asked the bus boy if he could get our waitress from the back.

When she came back I informed her that there was no avocado on the sandwich, and she said she’d go get some. She seemed kind of put off by my request so my husband didn’t mention that his cheeseburger was cold and the cheese wasn’t even melted. The waitress came back and put a plate of brown and rotten avocado slices on the table and walked away.

I wanted to just leave right then, but I kinda didn’t want to ruin the date night or be a “Karen”. So, I pushed the plate away and was just going to eat the sandwich without it. She came back after a bit, looked at the plate of avocado slices, and asked if everything was okay. I replied, “Not really. These are all brown.” She said, “I’ll go see if they have a different one.”

She brought back a plate with fresh avocado slices (all green, not any brown spots), set it on the table, and walked away. She didn’t offer an apology, and she didn’t ask if these were better or acceptable, and she didn’t offer to comp or reduce the price of the meal.

Neither one of us were hungry after that. His sandwich was cold and tasted off, he paid extra for fries instead of the potato chips that came with the sandwich and they were cold too, there was a hair in my sandwich, and then the avocado debacle. Between that and the obvious attitude from the waitress, we just asked for our check and left.

I kinda wish I spoke up and suggested we try the new mushroom Swiss burger at BK, or asked that we pick up some deli items and just had a “car picnic” at the beach so we could watch the waves. I...

Nice menu variety. Complimentary popcorn appetizer is a great welcoming touch. Place was very clean, no sticky worn-out menus. Lotta seating. We were sat immediately but service was slooooowwww. It was Friday night, yes. The restaurant hada nice crowd, but not packed. Server was nice enough, just took about 20 mins to get our order. Afterwards it also took another good 20 mins to get the food. All my companions got burgers which were massive n looked wonderful. They raved about them. I chose the roast beast. Menu said it came with taters+gravy. Yeah, all stacked like a messy devil's tower. Gravy on top o taters on top of meat on top of a slab o bread. What?! Yes. It was all piled o topa each other, which I did not enjoy. (My companions would have found it odd if i was snappin pix o my dish so i didn't. ) I thought it an obvious attempt to make the meat look like a larger portion than it actually was, as well as including the bread as a filler. Meh. Felt like a dirty trick. Not cool. The gravy was good. Roast beast obviously typical lunch meat type. Dry n not especially soft. Aside from the sloppy presentation, the meal was overall quite bland, which I spose I should be well accustomed to by now that I've lived in NWIN nearly 10 years. sigh but I still hold out hope for those rare gems when I'm pleasantly surprised. Wow, what an experience. Well, this was me n Hubby's 1st time here after living Michigan City 15yrs. We have always heard the establishment wasn't to welcoming to melanin people. Nevertheless, staff was pleasant and welcoming to our jokes to surface a smile😊 When our appetizer arrived,as I was pouring sauce onto my plate there was a piece of lettuce in sauce. 🤔1st thought was this someone's leftover sauce? Our waitress cleaned it up with a "oh, its right next to the salad station" (unprofessional for a restaurant) but benefit of the doubt. Food arrived and one plate was missing food included in the meal #2. Paid for meal, waitress brought back change, but left our credit card in the back#3. The other waitress commented "oh, I saw a credit card back there and said oh someone left their card". So our card was left in the open where someone could steal our card information, how careless🤦🏽‍♀Both my husband and I are ministers and I left the tip the Lord told me to leave, not what I would have based on our experience. We didn't go here expecting the worse, we went to form our own opinion based off our own experience. I would like to assume that the service was not this intentionally chaotic due to our ethnicity, and could have happened to anyone.
