My husband and I are just returning from a fabulous stay in Cape May. We spent three nights at the Peninsula Boutique Hotel at Kings Grant which is part of The Cape Collection. The Inn was beautifully decorated with an appearance of French elegance within the design of the rooms and dinning area in the Provence Restaurant that is within the same building. Breakfast was included with our stay which was a nice addition. French pressed coffee and warm sweet breads and pastries were a nice start to our mornings . The breakfast choices, including brunch on the weekends, was limited and the kitchen seemed to struggle with over cooking some items . The breakfast potatoes were overdone, dark and very crispy to the point of being brown chunks of greasy potato chips, the baked overnight oats were very hard and difficult to eat - we tried to like them but just couldn’t eat them. The next day we tried the Dutch Baby Pancake in a cast iron pan , I make these frequently and they usually puff up to a pillowy soft crepe like texture these; however, were too thin and crispy - again over cooked like a crispy cracker instead of soft pancake like crepe. The blueberry and lemon topping were both delicious . On the third day we tried the brioche French toast which came as three triangles of French toast with nice toppings, but again over cooked - the French toast was hard with a couple ends blackened like being stuck on the hot corner of the griddle. I am accustomed to puffy, thick soft slices of brioche bread when having French toast ; however, thin dark style may just be the way they prepare it. Overall breakfast was okay- we were a bit disappointed though . The staff was extremely friendly and attentive to any request, but they only had one server and a hostess helping - they did an amazing job just seemed a bit short staffed . A place you feel both welcome...
Read moreThis is a wonderful spot for those who enjoy a fine dining atmosphere with creative cuisine, spot on service and a lovely decor.
Advice- the five course option is not too much for the average person. I would assume 3 courses would be a very light dinner.
It’s byob and they do a wonderful job with wine preparation (decanters, proper glassware, wine buckets etc). So bring the good stuff
Highlights- everyone from front of house was excellent. All three front of house employees seemed truly dedicated in making sure we were enjoying ourselves. The highlight of the experience was the hostess and both servers.
The chef makes beautiful plates. You can tell a lot of effort goes into the design and look of each dish. I love the variety of plates.
(Spoiler alter)- I love when there are complementary appetizers to start (AB). And not because of more volume, but the effort that goes into the show and the little things. Fantastic touch.
The server saw my wife was pregnant and offered her a veritable course that was amazing and just a thoughtful as the carpaccio. Very thoughtful.
All the appetizers were excellent. I think the mushroom tart ate differently than how I perceived it ready the description but no complaints.
We both got the steak and it was prepared perfectly. The char they achieved was very impressive.
It’s a beautiful restaurant with parking and a wonderful overall decor.
Suggestions- really very little but… espresso was very weak in flavor and seemed watered down ( it may have been because I ordered a double?). The potato served with the steak wasn’t fully cooked. The chocolate dessert was beautiful but honestly dry and a little simple.
Thank you for a wonderful experience. We will be back...
Read moreWe had a wonderful dining experience on the first evening (10/4) this restaurant offered both its pre-fix and ala carte menus. Everything about our experience was ELEVATED from our prior try a year ago. We were greeted by a very nice hostess who was patient and helpful with our questions. Our server, Max, was professional and attentive even though there was a good crowd and he seemed to be the sole server on the floor- he didn’t miss a beat. Kudos to the Chef - we have dined many years at prior establishments he has worked, but this menu offers different preparations with fish, meat, chicken and vegetarian offerings. At our last visit the food was stunning but lacked flavor. This time every course we had was spot on in every regard. This is a beautiful establishment that exudes class and it is great to have a kitchen that matches, if not exceeds, the ambience. Ala carte pricing is by the course permitting one entree and as many appetizers and desserts that you want. We started with local Sweet Amalia oysters which are always delicious. We had onion soup and a pasta dish, both delicious. Our entrees were tenderloin and barramundi - again delicious. The servings are not large but very fair relative the pricing and plentiful unto themselves. We skipped dessert as we were full. Top this off with Provence being BYOB and it’s a great dining establishment to visit. Our bill before tax and tip was $113 for 5 courses, 3 appetizers and 2 entrees which is reasonable considering the quality of ingredients and preparation, the professional service, and warm ambience. We will...
