Overall, I'm impressed with the fresh Mexican flavors that Lupe's brings to the Middleton Hills neighborhood. I've twice ordered the carnitas burrito, once to dine in and once as a carryout. The quality of the pork is superb, bursting with flavor and impossibly succulent without being too greasy. While the burritos are slightly smaller than the version served by my current Mexican fave El Rancho on South Park St., the kitchen crew does not scrimp when the amount of meat they load into their burritos. My only complaint is that the fillings are often uneven applied, so some bites are all meat, others are only rice and beans (a minor quibble). For those with milder palettes, be forewarned that the pickled jalapenos are super spicy.
All the staff members I've encounters are extremely personable - you can tell they enjoy what they do and their infectious enthusiasm rubs off on the customers. They've made the interior a min-shrine to Mexican wrestling, which is featured on the flat screen in the dining area and on the murals on the wall - very fun! There also are a number of outdoor tables to you can enjoy your meal al fresco. The brightly colored chairs and pictures on the walls along with the spirited Mexican music amplify the festive atmosphere of Lupe's.
Lupe's features counter service, you select your fixings as you move down the line (much like Chipotle). Both times I visited, a long lines of prospective customers started to build due to the indecisiveness of those before them in line. Hopefully these delays will dissipate as customers before more familiar with the menu and the staff becomes more proficient at assembling the orders.

Read moreI've been a regular at Lupe's Taqueria for years now, and it has honestly become my go-to spot - I find myself there at least once a week, sometimes more. What started as curiosity about a new local place has turned into genuine loyalty, and here's why. The food is consistently excellent. While I've worked my way through most of the menu over time, the Tacos al Pastor remain my absolute favorite - perfectly seasoned, authentic flavors, and always fresh. When I want something heartier, their burritos and burrito bowls never disappoint. The portions are generous, the ingredients are quality, and everything tastes like it's made with care.
But what really sets Lupe's apart is the ownership and service. The owner runs this place with remarkable professionalism and integrity. I experienced this firsthand a few years ago when I accidentally left something very valuable at my table after a particularly exhausting workday. When I realized my mistake and returned the next morning in a panic, the owner had already secured my item safely. Rather than just handing it over, he had me describe it in detail to verify I was the rightful owner - exactly the kind of careful, trustworthy approach you'd hope for but rarely see. The personal touch doesn't stop there. Whether I encounter the owner at the restaurant or around town, he always takes time to greet me warmly and ask about my family. It's that genuine care for customers that transforms a good restaurant into a community staple.
The service is consistently friendly and efficient, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the value is outstanding. This is the kind of family-owned business that makes you proud to be a regular customer. If you haven't tried Lupe's yet, you're missing out on both exceptional food and exceptional people.
