I am (was) a frequent customer of Custom House Coffee, often going out of my way to go there. However, today was my last day giving them my business. I was looking forward to sitting down and enjoying a coffee and donut with my 1 year old daughter on our day off together. After I purchased my food and coffee, I waited patiently for a table to come open due to it being busy. As I held my daughter for over 15 minutes, I watched these two men (I won’t call them gentlemen) look over at me several times. They were clearly done with their coffees and were just sitting there talking. If I were in their position I would think to myself, let me give this man holding his child our table because that is the right thing to do and we don’t need to be sitting here anymore taking up space. I was finally able to get a table once a group left. A few minutes after I sat down the two men got up and I noticed one of them was wearing a Custom House Coffee shirt. It turns out that he was the owner. I worked in the hospitality field for many years and I know not one of my bosses would ever sit down and just stare at a man holding his child. Not only was it the least gentlemanly thing you could do, it was piss poor customer service. If the owner thinks that is acceptable, then he will never get my business again. As I was leaving I went up to the owner and told him how I felt of his actions to which all I received was a weak “I’m sorry”. I didn’t expect everyone to jump up from their seats to give it to me but I would expect more from the owner of a business who I just gave my money to....
Read moreThis has probably become my favorite coffee shop in the Newport area lately. A basic building with some covered outdoor seating gives way to a rustic interior with plenty of seating a kind of split interior with your coffee bar on the left and a roastery on the right. A medium amount of seating in the back behind everything.
The coffee here is phenomal. It was busy the few times I've been so I haven't been able to talk to the baristas about the beans they're using and the whole coffee bar is directly infront of you. So I can't exactly see what they're doing but it yields amazing coffee and drinks. I took my boys with me here and ordered them 2 got chocolates to which were made to a very kid friendly temperature without me even needing to ask. Some places will steam the milk to practically a boil.
The food is good. They seem to have a limited menu (definitely more of a coffee shop over cafe) and I'm ok with that. It was good. With an addition of fresh baked goods (that looked imported from a bakery) there is plenty to chose from for food. In addition, they do have a small wall with some coffee accessories for sale. The price for everything seems about average for a latte costing ~$6.
Overall I love the environment and coffee here. Whether I have the time to sit or just passing thru, I'm more than happy to stop and...
Read moreI went to Newport RI for the day, and on my way back, i came across this coffee house. It was a Saturday, so It was pretty busy, but there was a decent sized lot to park in, and I was able to find a space. From the outside, it looks like a little house with a porch. They had flower boxes and tables and chairs. When you walked in, it was very inviting the food looked amazing. There were old wood barrels and an area where it looked like they made their own bags of coffee to sell. I loved the old jars and cans that lined shelves near the ceiling. Their was ample room for people to sit and enjoy their food and beverages as there were a couple of different areas with seating. I ordered a latte and a cinnamon roll, and the associates were very pleasant. The order came out quickly and was delicious. The cinnamon roll was the best I've ever had, I will definitely go back again. If you haven't checked them out yet. Please do, you won't be...
