Had to try some Thai in our area and I had heard from a fellow foodie to check out “Simply Thai” in Middletown.
This location was easy to get too, easy to park, and the restaurant is nice and clean with a fun tropical theme to it. The staff were young, but courteous, timely and attentive. My wife has actually visited Thailand twice, and she was impressed with the menu selection and authenticity of our dishes taste and her sweet peach boba tea that she had. Which although the large tea was $7, it was VERY good, and I’ve had many a southern sweet tea too. She said that it reminded her of the tea in Thailand, some of the best she’s ever had! And we travel a lot.
We had just one appetizer, the “curry puffs” (picture taken). Which were very good, enough to share for two. And although their food does not look like much, they are power packed with flavor! The curry puffs were sweet, crunchy, and the cucumber dip was very good. Highly recommended, I bet the “satay” appetizer is also delicious; we will have to try that another time.
For the main dish, we each ordered the Chicken Pad Thai, at a spicy 2 (picture included). Again, the dish does not look like much and the portion was MASSIVE! Enough to make an Italian eatery blush. Honestly, me and my wife could have split it between the two of us, but hey, left overs are good too! Beware, I would consider spicy level 2 to be at the highest “spice” that most people could probably still find palatable but any hotter and your tongue will be in for a lava treatment. Unless you are into that, but if it’s your first time eating Thai food, stick to 0-2 in spicy. They will also give free samples of their spices to taste and choose which one you would like too. Their menu was good, with many many options to add toppings, change meat to seafood to Tofu and even adding ingredients a plenty. They have multiple vegan and gluten free dishes and offerings too. However, regarding their menu, you can also customize your dishes if you wish, but some of the additional toppings were expensive. Such as adding olive oil to your dish is an extra $1.50, or others seemed a tad bit odd.
I did rate the restaurant as a 4/5 because I am honest and don’t like to hand out too many 5/5s. The reasons why I rated this 4/5 was because of a few reasons: Seating in the booths was uncomfortable, with the bottom of the booths falling off or unglued every time I shifted I felt like it might slide off. Not the end of the world, but they should fix those ASAP. Their drink menu leaves more to be desired. Such as more beer options, more soda options, or having sugar free options. The Pad Thai was served way too hot! Not the “spice”, but the actual temperature of the noodles was borderline scolding. So much of it we had to wait to eat, or blow on them to cool them down. But once the temp went down after 10 mins, it was easier and more enjoyable to eat. A better dessert menu could use improvement. Such as maybe frozen yogurt options or some sort of a chocolate delectable would be nice. But they only have sweet rice and a deep fried banana. I know most Thai restaurants don’t have much for dessert, but it could make for a fun way to differentiate themselves from their competition.
Check it out! It is good food! I hope they see my recommendations and consider solutions if they...
Read moreI feel compelled to share the absolute worst customer service experience I have had in Louisville since moving to the city 5 years ago. I was desperately in the mood for Thai yesterday so my husband took me to our favorite in town. We got there early, about 6pm, and there were few tables filled. We were both really hungry so we ordered 2 appetizers and then ordered our entrees at the same time. The appetizers took almost a half hour to come out. While small, they were delicious and $1 off with Happy Hour pricing. My husband had a soda and I had iced tea, which the waitress refilled one time in an hour for my husband. He sat with an empty drink for over a half hour. The waitress never cleared the appetizer plates and we sat staring at them for a while and then realized we had waited over an hour for our entrees, which never came. Our waitress kept saying “It’ll be out soon” but after an hour, we’d had enough. We ordered classic pad Thai and the restaurant wasn’t packed.
My husband finally went to the hostess stand to say we can pay for our appetizers and drinks but to please cancel the entrees because we were leaving. She gave a fuss and stormed away. Both the hostess and the waitress came to our table and offered us coupons for the next visit which they said would be good for an entrée off but we said no thanks and could we just have the check so we could leave. They never brought the check so my husband threw some cash on the table and we walked out. The hostess chased us out into the parking lot yelling that we owed more money (they never brought us a check so how were we supposed to know? We made our best guess.). She also gave us the “free entrée coupons” which literally just said “20% off your next order” on them.
When I calmly asked to speak with her manager, she shot back with snark insisting she was the manager. I was shocked at her behavior and attitude; it was entirely unprofessional, especially for someone working in a managerial capacity. I work as a corporate client manager and would be fired on the spot for treating customers this way. Shame on Simply Thai. I have never felt so shaken up at a restaurant in my life. The food is delicious and it was our favorite Thai spot in town. What an...
Read moreGreat, stand-out thai food that doesn't break your wallet.
Some of the stand out menu items are the Thai Iced tea, Tom Yum Soup and the Sweet Potato Pad Thai.
The Thai Iced Tea was nice and mellow, not too sweet (like some other Thai places can do) with nice, rich cream. It was a really good compliment to the rest of the dishes and honestly one of the better Thai Iced Teas that I have had. Usually that's a pretty good indicator of the Thai place being good.
As an appetizer dish I got the Simply Thai Roll which was very nice and came in a kind of cheeze sauce or something with a nice twinge of spice.
Ordered the Tom Yum with tofu, which came out promptly. It was very good, and had a nice citrus taste that was emphasized nicely with cilantro leaves.
As the entree I ordered the Sweet Potato Pad Thai, Hot 5 with vetables only and more spice to add on the side.
Regarding the spiciness/ heat level - a scale from 1 to 5 with 1 being extra mild and 5 being Thai Hot ("very hot") - I don't really think that when you order a 5 spiciness level that they are truly giving Thai Hot, which would be my only complaint. My Sweet Potato Pad Thai came out only mildly spicy, probably 2x the spiciness of "Fire" from Taco Bell (in my opinion).
Now I concede that I haven't found many Thai places that serve food at the spiciness level that I enjoy, as I like things pretty hot (I like a drop of Dave's Insanity in many of my meals) but even with the spice on the side to add that wasn't enough, so I began to wonder how useful of a metric the 1 to 5 scale truly is for the average person. The spice on the side seemed to be a mix of crushed red pepper in an oil base, which really didn't do much for me, so if you're a spiceaholic, be sure to ask for the Thai Hot level with some Ghost Pepper powder on the side.
Altogether I rate this place at 5 stars for their unique flavor and nice atmosphere, with only one criticism: fix the spiciness rating; as currently it's more like a cold reading on how hot the...
