I'm definitely glad Jay's was an option for us during lunch while visiting for the day in Millington. I'd read reviews on other eateries in the area and, sadly, did not feel I would receive good service, or service at all, at those places. Don't be fooled by the outside of the building at Jay's: it is wonderfully decorated inside, bright and welcoming. I so badly would like to give 5 stars and may be able to do so after another visit, but our experience on New Year's Day was not what we expected based on other reviews. Placing a dine-in order was a breeze, with the young lady at the counter being so friendly, and our order didn't take long to come out.
Our issues were that a large party of people maybe had some type of New Year event at the restaurant and took up the entire back half of seating. These now empty tables were not bussed timely and other arriving customers, including ourselves, had to stand and wait for a place to sit. Once our food was ready a table, but not the chairs, was finally cleaned for us. There was also a miscommunication with my drink order and I'd eaten my entire meal before I got it, after hubby had to go ask for a refill on his drink and inquire about the status of mine. My drink order was acknowledged at our table by management and corrected promptly. Hubby's lunch food was hot, fresh and tasty; he thoroughly enjoyed it. My breakfast bowl was ok; the grits were too thick, a bit dry and not warm enough.
We've given Jay's the benefit of the doubt, being that they were open and serving on a holiday, when many other non fast food eateries weren't. And maybe they were short staffed, if not, closing or offering only to-go orders while the event was going on with so many other people to take care of at one time would've been a better idea.
Despite the hiccups we had, we will be back and do recommend giving them a try if you're...
Read moreTLDR: Good food, service, and atmosphere, but the menu leans niche. The building has a high seating capacity but only one toilet per bathroom.
Food: The menu offers some hits and misses. The biscuits and gravy stood out with their fluffiness and rich flavor, though the gravy's heavy seasoning might not appeal to all palates. The scrambled eggs were light and fluffy, with a noticeable seasoning blend—pleasant but unexpected. The waffles were soft and powdered with sugar, enjoyable for some but not for those who prefer crunchier textures or less sweetness. The bacon, unfortunately, was dehydrated to the point of snapping, with an unusual flavor that may not suit traditionalists. The coffee, while unique, came at a premium price of $3 for a regular black cup and might not appeal to those looking for a classic coffee experience.
Service: The service operates fast-food style, with customers ordering at the counter and staff interaction is minimal, but the absence of a tipping culture can be refreshing for some diners.
Atmosphere: The building's exterior may not catch the eye, but the interior is a pleasant surprise—clean, stylish, and inviting, with blue leather, wood accents, and light stone walls. The pastry display is enticing. While the seating capacity is high, having just one toilet in the men's bathroom could become an issue, especially after the morning coffee rush.
Summary: Jay's Coffee and Cuisine offers a cozy and stylish dining experience with some flavorful menu options, though its niche approach to seasoning and texture might not suit everyone's tastes. The fast-food-style service is efficient but lacks the personal touch of traditional dining. The atmosphere is inviting, but the limited restroom facilities may pose a minor inconvenience. Overall, it’s worth a visit if you enjoy bold flavors and a no-fuss...
Read moreThe place is clean and open, but the overwhelming smell of fabuloso is a bit off-putting. The smell actually burned my nose. They should go easy on that stuff. Clean can be clean without an overwhelming chemical smell. We ordered with no issues. Although, $3 for a small orange juice is ridiculous. Each meal does not include a drink, and this is generally standard for restaurants. Drinks are generally included with a meal. $60 for 3 adult meals and 1 kids meal. Seems excessive for basic breakfast food. It took 15 minutes just to get orange juice. 17 minutes to get a coffee. 30 minutes to get food. Not terrible. Not great. Food was average and overpriced. The oatmeal was completely flavorless/bland. Just boiled oats and some cinnamon on the side (in a little cup) with no sugar or butter or anything. Honestly won't be returning. Also, you have to specifically ask them what the kods menu contains, as they do not advertise this on their monitors. There is simply a sign indicating you have to ask about the kids menu. This is a bit annoying. The only thing not pictured are the kids pancakes. I had the breakfast bowl with chicken sausage and potatoes. It comes with cheese and gravy over it. Other meals are the breakfast plate (sunny side up eggs, bacon, potatoes, and a croissant) and oatmeal and a chicken biscuit. We also didn't like how they didn't acknowledge us at all once we ordered. We waited and had no clue when stuff would be out. They weren't busy. They could have told us it would take time to get drinks or something, given...
