…Cape May May boast beautiful, sandy beaches and its historic charm-But what it doesn’t have? Is Jim’s Lunch!
To the uninitiated? Jim’s represents a 100-year-old eatery that bridged the gap between the Diner, Luncheonette, ‘Greasy-Spoon’ (Said in absolute fondness and by ‘30’s definition.) and fast-food restaurant; It’s what was a common sight in “Anytown, USA” that’s thankfully survived a century-And I’m happy to have known their delightful comfort food for four decades of that century!
The food is as good as the first time my father sat my 4-year-old self at the counter-The menu features many comfort-food specials; Order them all-I promise you won’t be disappointed! As every restaurant has its: “Schtick,” many of the lunch specials are delivered in their hot, tasty glory atop simple wax paper….And my word! Aren’t they simply delightful? (Nod your head: “Yes.” If you don’t know by now? You really need to visit Jim’s!)
In a pinch, I turn to the burger-Actually? The double cheeseburger-With everything. “Everything” includes their own onion sauce-Fresh onions are a delight versus the sloppy “mush” I’ve encountered in my lifetime at some other spots! It makes your burger, dog, or just about anything else you ask for it on: “Pop.” You’ll even soak your fries in it-Promise! Fresh soups, good desserts-All served up quick and fresh!
I like to think that each restaurant puts their own: “Spin” on Americana-From their burgers to their signature dishes. Jim’s has their very own on everything they make-And I enjoy their burgers as much as I enjoy those: “Gourmet Chophouse Creations” found at a high-line establishment; They’re simply “different,” but equally tasty! Appreciate the food for what it is-You’ll see!
40-years-later, sitting at those stools, sipping on a cold fountain soda out of a large cup, I could never tire of making my monthly pilgrimage to Millville to eat here; I’ve always left with a full belly and a smile!
….A few quick pointers: Like just about every restaurant in my hometown growing up, Jim’s still is the old-fashioned: “…Why would someone use a credit card to pay for lunch?” There’s an ATM on-premise, but they still cheerfully and only accept the kind of payment that folds and jingles…And you won’t need much of that folding green paper, either!
…..Prices are excellent, matching the food.
…..Order a soup with your food-You’re welcome!
……You may accidentally eat the paper your burger or lunch is served on-Don’t worry-I’ve done it plenty of times in a food frenzy! #Thesauce.
…..Finally? It’s important to keep an American treasure such as Jim’s around for another century-And why I make my 50-minute pilgrimage each month! For the time you’ll waste sitting in line at the drive-through at the next trendy fast food restaurant, you can sit down and have real food-Served like you remember it! Don’t have time? Jim’s has takeout!
…..C’mon….What’s that I see in your lunch bag? A soggy sandwich you cobbled together half-asleep when you just woke up? Take my advice-Hand it to that co-worker who famously: “Eats everything.” Head over to Jim’s.
Despite being a Prohibition-Era restaurant, you don’t have to knock with a password-Just walk in, sit on down and be prepared for some friendly service-And to be...
Read moreJim's Lunch in the heart of Millville is not just any old restaurant or diner, it is a South Jersey institution. You may have heard of the famous baseball player, Mike Trout. He hails from Millville and now plays for the Anaheim Angels. He also loves Jim's Lunch and gets their hamburgers when he is back home or has his mom or sister pick them up for him. There is even a sign on the wall that says "#27 Mike Trout is our Angel on High Street". Mike loves Jim's Lunch and so do those from the Holly City. Jim's Lunch has been around for about 94 years and is still family-owned. I could tell during my most recent visit that was Rochelle was in charge and she was running the place. She called out the orders and kept all the other staff on their toes and the orders coming. The staff wears maroon shirts with the name written in cursive and the feel of Jim's is classic and like it stopped in time. The smells from the grill fill the establishment and the chatter and action adds character.
As you enter the restaurant from High Street, you will see the patties and wieners on the grill loaded with cheese and the freshly cut chopped onions on the side. There is an old-fashioned register and they only take cash. If you need to get cash, there is an ATM inside. You seat yourself and can sit at the counter on one of the stools or grab a booth in the main room or back dining room. Rochelle did a great job too of coordinating and telling people where to sit when something opened up. I placed my order on the phone and waited a few minutes when I arrived. I enjoyed watching all of the action and cooking and yelling. Your burgers and sandwiches are served on piece of waxed deli paper and the sauce just runs all over the paper. I also like how the glass paper weights from nearby Wheaton Village hold the waxed paper in place on the counter as the beef is grilling. The sauce is the famous ingredient made from the family recipe and you can dip your food in it and enjoy it on the burgers and cheesesteaks and wieners. When you order wit "everything" , that means mustard, onions and the famous sauce. Jim's Lunch also serves breakfast and from my last visit a few years ago, the rice pudding was delicious. My cousins love their fries too and Jim's does it all right. If you in Millville , you have to come here at least once. I highly recommend the fried chicken and the sides are all homemade. The season is Columbus Day through Memorial Day and closed on Sunday. Millville locals honor the opening day as if it were a holiday and I can see why. Get your double cheeseburger wit sauce and fries and a bunch of napkins. You...
Read moreI'm only giving 1 star! It's not the food. The food is and always has been delicious for the last 30 years that I've been coming here. I used to live in millville as a kid but now I live much further away. So now it became more of a delicacy for me since the place is about an hour away. Today I went with my fiance for the last time this year before they close for the season for one last burger. Like I said the food was great. My fiance and I were eating minding our business. I was really enjoying the double hamburger with everything on it. I was looking down at my plate in the zone eating the deliciousness I had in front of me. I look up and there's some guy I never seen there before staring at me in front our booth. He just stood there staring at me and then kept asking me I'd I was dead or meditating or something stupid like that. He made me feel very uncomfortable and embarrassed to be there. I was minding my own business just trying to enjoy my food sir! Leave me alone. So I left immediately. NEVER have I felt so uncomfortable and unwelcomed in this place before. I don't know if I'll ever be back. Unfortunately as I was paying for the bill. I found out the guy was the owners husband 😱. I said oh great. I hope that's not what he does normally to people because he's going to send alot of people out the door. I hope I never see him again if I ever come back. Sharon was my server and she was great. After I told her what happened she got me out of there very quickly. From the sound of it this isn't the 1st time he has done this either from what I heard so watch out for him. I miss Rochelle and Jim. Perhaps only order takeout to avoid...
