I’ve never seen Allie Boy's without a line or a wait time south of 30 minutes, but as the only place in Milwaukee that I know of to get a hand rolled bagel of this caliber or a self-proclaimed “posh nosh”, it’s fair to say their popularity is well-deserved. I stand in line at this crowded but gorgeous counter-service cafe in the Walker’s Point neighborhood listening to a flock of college students talk about the earthiness of this matcha and how they definitely need to get it next time, as I wrestle with my decision of what to get this time. Any bagel with cream cheese here is always a top-tier choice, but there is a richer sandwich worthy of review. Today, we feast on “The Classic” at Allie Boy’s, a familiar interpretation of the beloved Bagel and Lox: house-cured lox, tomato, onion, caper, dill, and labneh & herb cream cheese on a fresh plain bagel.
This may be the most confusing sandwich I’ve reviewed. Every part of it demanded my attention. Bagel: spot on. Lox: bold and subtly briny. Cream cheese: dense and abundant. Dill: very present. Tomato, onion, and caper: hey, they’re just happy to be working with such an incredible cast. Any attempt to focus on something other than the barrage of aggressive flavors or the unwieldiness that any bagel sandwich possesses was in vain. It’s like being unable to think straight when the music is too loud but with taste. This sandwich is loud and fun and on the edge of repulsive, which makes it all the more compelling. The bagel is a hug, the lox is a slap to the face, and the intensity of the dill is a whisper in the ear that does things to you that you don’t understand.
It’s an experience – the only of its kind in Milwaukee – so please go eat this sandwich. I need someone to help me understand...
Read morePlaced a pick up order seeing as we have only ever been to the farewell location. Have never been to this national location before. They were extremely busy and I’ve worked customer service before so I try to be patient with attitude from employees because that job is extremely stressful however I was extremely put off by one of the employees working today 5/31. Seeing as we had never been there before we walked up to the counter to try and figure out how things worked here. My wife was checking the receipts on the bags to see if ours was up there. We were asked if they could help us to which we said yes we placed a pick up order. We were then chastised about just grabbing bags off the counter which never occurred while this employee continued to complain about us to other coworkers and employees behind the bar under their breath loud enough for us to hear. We had drinks with our order as well so we were just waiting for those. When we were handed the coffee I inquired about the juices we had as well. To which said employee scoffed and said something along the lines of this is why you don’t just come grab things off the counter. I very much understand that it was busy and emotions run high but one that didn’t happen and two assuming every single customer you come into contact with at a customer service job is an idiot who can’t follow directions doesn’t make people feel great. We will not be returning to this location. I’ve only ever had wonderful experiences at the...
Read moreMy husband and I came here on a day their AC was out and it was a bajillion degrees outside, so there was no inside service. We ordered with the server in a tent outside and waited for our food in the patio. We decided to eat in our car only because it was super hot outside, but that is not fault of the restaurant's. Our food came out quick, and the servers were hustling. I'm appreciative of the team that was hustling inside without AC. It was like 93, with a "feels like" of 104 degrees.
I had The Classic which is lox, on an Everything bagel. Good, but nothing ground breaking and as another person said I wish the bagel was toasted. I did have to fight the bagel a bit which made the cream cheese and lox messy as I chewed through. I also ordered the Strawberry Crunch Coffee Cake because the server recommended it, and I was envisioning those Strawberry Crunch ice cream bars from childhood, but in coffee cake form. I know that's what they were going for, but it was a let down. Needed less cake, more crunch. Husband had the whitefish salad sando on pumpernickel bagel and he said it was really good, but wished there was more dilled shallots. Price is what I expect for fish and fresh bakery items. Free street parking and a paid parking lot right across the street that likely...
