A surprisingly unique experience to be had in the downtown Milwaukee area. AXE is a creative take on the ubiquitous tavern/bar scene in Wisconsin in that axe-throwing is the main activity! I say axe-throwing, but for those that are a little intimidated, it's actually more like hatchet-throwing. Alcohol + axe throwing = fun in my book. First of all, let's talk about the safety concerns....the way the owners have set up the activity is very safe. There are multiple lanes for throwing that are all divided from each other by wood and welded wire fencing. There's simply no way anyone in an adjacent lane can hit someone in the next lane over. In addition, they provide a thorough safety briefing and training before you start and they have attendants present the entire time to make sure everyone is acting appropriately. Successful throwing is actually surprisingly simple once you get the hang of it, but hitting your intended mark takes some focus and practice. I promise you'll enjoy the time spent trying. With respect to the rest of the premises, the space is large and can handle large groups provided you call in advance to reserve time. The full service bar is simple and uncomplicated and fits in well with the rustic theme used throughout the building. The end result is that the focus is really on the interaction with your party and the bar itself is secondary. That's a nice change from the usual layout found. Obviously, when multiple people are throwing axes it can be a little loud so don't expect to have quiet conversations in this place. Go here to try something new and blow off a little steam and you'll leave having had a good time. And if you have trouble getting your axe to stick, don't get frustrated...ask for help and plan to come back for...

My only reason for not giving a full rating is with this in mind, so don't come in thinking it will automatically fit your 'vibe'. They have snacks, but I did not try them. Next, the space is small, but efficient with the space. It is styled to fit the theme of a good and laid back hobby experience. Let's go into the axe throwing before going into the drinks. 12 axe throwing 'lanes' (for the initiated, think like bowling lanes). The staff is more than willing to teach you and coach on the methods of throwing. Behave yourself to the rules, while axes are blunt they are still slightly dangerous (that's what the waiver is for). But a uniquely satisfying experience. They will check in on you, but not constantly hover like some places. Be adults and behave and you'll do fine. Good prices as well, for individual and groups, especially for downtown locations.
The drinks...it is simple. Do not expect exotic cocktails. But a reasonable balance of about 22-ish beers and fundamental liquor. They can mix some of the basics. With that in mind, remember it is axe throwing first, not enough space to be a bar hangout. But enough for you to hang out after throwing.
Note: my pricing is both an ace throwing for an hour and a few drinks.
Parking around this area: a fair amount of street parking with a public parking garage across the street.
Of you're into non-Wisco old fashions or have questions, Ryan was great at discussing and accommodating. Did very well at managing while talking...

I didn't think I'd have as much fun as I did doing this but it was awesome! My friends and I were laughing and having fun the entire time!
So, we went in early. They are not fully open for another two weeks, and in that time between they are doing a soft opening. Right now there is still some building going on but the bar and six throwing lanes are open.
The space feels very large and open with high ceilings and lots of areas to move around and sit down. There are large counters that they call the spectator line -- if you aren't throwing, you sit or stand behind it! There is enough space for your whole team (up to six per lane) to be sitting. The bar is kind of a big square so you can sit on either side to get drinks. There is a nice lounge area too with comfy chairs to sit.
When it's time to throw, an "Axe Master" guides you on safety and also how to be most successful when you throw. They will hang around during games too and offer pointers. To be honest, it's not easy! The axe doesn't stick always stick, but it was so much fun trying and the longer I was there (and coincidentally, the more drunk I was) I did better! I really want to keep coming back until I'm decent with my friends so we can really compete. For the record - you do not need to be signed up to throw axes to hang out at the bar and drink.
I'm so excited about this new bar and will definitely be back. I feel like it's going to be super popular so if you want to throw axes it's probably best to sign up ahead of time on...
