What a cute little place. Tucked in a quiet neighborhood in northeast Minneapolis. If you walk up, it looks like all they do is scoop ice cream (made on the spot). But the sign behind the till says they make burgers, too. Good thing I looked at the sign. I ordered a Dream Burger before my ice cream. It was THE BEST smash burger I’ve had anywhere. Yum! I ordered a double patty version. It sincerely filled me up, and it was worth every bite. Then I had a cup of brown sugar cookie dough ice cream. It was scrumptious, too. They do have some logistics challenges. There is really no parking except on-street parking around the corner. And the only place to eat (if you’re not ordering to go) is outdoors at the uncovered metal counters. But if you’re looking for a great burger and some great ice cream on a nice day outside, this is your place. Definitely worth a return visit for me.
Two years later: The Dream Burger still isn’t bad, but they clearly have a new cook or two making them. A smash burger should have caramelization and be crispy on the outside. After trying them twice in a month, they seem to have lost that since my first review. The patties are still thin but much mushier and lacking what makes a true smash burger. The sauce is also thinner and more watery and they put a lot of it on. The bun soaks up all that liquid and turns mushy, too, making it nearly impossible to pick up and eat. Then they cram all of that into a cardboard box that is too small, and there is no way to eat this burger without your hands becoming a total mess. The flavor is still decent, but I think they need to go back to smash burger first principles that they did so well a...
Read moreI placed an order for 3 triple dream burgers with bacon($52) and 2 dream fries($14) , got a small ($3.50) and a large ice cream ($7) on a waffel cone ($1), and 3 coke($6). I spent about $99 since I also tipped.
This was my first time eating here, and the service was a bit disappointing. We started with the ice cream and waited a decent amount of time for our food. Since I waited inside, I had a direct view of the kitchen packaging area and saw they dropped my fries on the counter, picked it up with their hands, no gloves on, and put it back in the box and into my bag... 😐😐😐 which,..um... okaaay..... I guess.....?? I saw one of the other employee just looking at them like you really did that, but they didn't say anything either. Honestly, I wasn't comfortable saying anything either. I was praying it wasn't mine, but it was 😭 so I just shruged it off because I didn't want to cause a scene. However, having paid that much money, I would have appreciated my food more knowing it was handled with care and not like some street vendor.. Since it was colder out, we just took our food home to eat, and as we got home, we realized our coke wasn't in the bag.. we never got our coke... and I didn't hear the cashier didn't say anything about it. She just said we can choose our ice cream flavors to the right, so I figured the drinks must come with the food. So I guess I just paid another $6 for nothing 😭🤧. It was busy when we went. Probably not as busy as it could have been. But since it was more expensive and everything was paid for I was just a bit disappointed in the service.
Maybe I'm just too...
Read moreThis place is inconsistent. Listen, my favorite ice cream is, has always been, and always be cookie dough. Normally when I get this ice cream I'm ordering from Luce, high, and want an extra treat. Each pint seems to have a different texture, amount of fudge, and temperature at which it becomes melty. All of this is permissible. What is offensive, however, is how I can never tell if I will get an acceptable amount of cookie dough chunks. Sometimes you get a bunch, but I've had more than 1 time in which there were only 3-5 pieces of cookie dough in the pint. On two occasions, this has happened and all the cookie dough was at the TOP OF THE PINT. Let me tell you, friends, it is the most disappointing to be dipping your spoon into your fresh pint of ice cream, only to discover that in the first 3 bites you have consumed 100% of the cookie dough in said pint. Sometimes I eat the pint all in one sitting. Today, however, I was munching on a pint that I had only scratched the surface of last week (meaning maybe 2cm of product was gone) and discovered that the remainder of the pint had zero cookie dough.
If you are going to have a cookie dough ice cream, you best know how to get cookie dough in more than 10% of the pint. Not to mention that they cut their cookie dough into cubes/rectangles which also seems somehow sacrilegious.
Cookie dough is not the only flavor I've had. However, I find the same inconsistency to be present in the other flavors. And even on the best of days, this ice cream is a 7.5/10. I wish that Luce...
