November 2021 update: I rescind my statement about not caring. Considering MN is number one on the Rona charts now thanks to all you reckless selfish people, put your damn mask on at the very least if you don’t wanna get vaxxed. Takes five minutes to order & wait for your drink at most, if you don’t wanna drink your coffee inside, go outside, mask less. Easy. $12 for a small oatmeal latte for my coworker & a large chai tea for myself. Meh on the chai. Tastes a little weird, I remember liking Spy House, but idk about today’s. I give three stars not because of the chai, but because of the hypocrisy. Upon entry, there’s a sign that states clear as day “MASKS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED (regardless of vaccination status)” One barista out of the (four) was wearing one. Now, I honestly don’t care about whether or not you’re anti or pro masks, that’s not the point here, the point is, don’t put a sign up like that & not adhere to your store’s *recommendations/demands* & expect your customers to. The latte art the mask wearing barista made is pretty though.

Spyhouse is easily my favorite coffee shop in the Uptown area as I’m sure it is for many others. Great vibes on a Saturday afternoon/evening in January with people playing chess, working, reading, gathering, and relaxing. It seems like there’s always a dull roar, one that isn’t distracting if you need to focus and that adds to the sense of it being a community space and place for shared experience. The coffee and tea are top notch, baristas are knowledgable and friendly, and seating is plentiful. There’s more space than you would expect from the outside; it extends all the way to a secluded hallway and corner room in the back. It’s easy to find a cozy nook and post up for a few hours. No menu of hot entrées but bakery items like the flourless fudge cookies and croissants are bomb. Always good memories here. I’ll be back.

Minnesota does local coffee pretty well - I'm not talking about Caribou, I'm referring to all of the other local coffee shops that have popped up in the various parts of downtown, uptown, St. Paul, etc. I stopped by the Uptown location on Saturday, which was the first 50 degree day we've had in months, so the city was alive. Not quite warm enough for an iced coffee, so I settled on the Spy Girl. I'm not sure if you've noticed, but lavender coffee has been all of the rage as of late. I don't know where it came from, but I can tell you why it's trending - it's delicious. It's not the best lavender latte that I've had, but it was still really good. I gave the place 4 stars only because there's a serious lack of seating when it's busy. The service was good. Not great, but good. I'll definitely be back again soon.

Ok, so I've been going to this spyhouse regularly for the last year, and up until today, it's been my favorite coffee shop. Unfortunatly, after today I won't be going back.

Today, like most, I walked into spyhouse with my kawolski's soup and ordered a jasmine lemonade tea, so far so good, but while I was getting my order the barista rudly/aggressivly told me I was not permitted to have outside food. Taken aback by his tone, I asked if this was a new policy and informed him I had been bringing in soup to this location for the last year and I have never been informed of the policy (Side note: I've seen other people bring in food from outside vendors before as well, so I know I'm not alone.) I told him that was fine, so I took my soup and tea outside and ate there. He then informed my friend that we were still not permitted to eat outside. At that point, we left.

Listen, I don't have a problem with the policy, however, I have a problem when the policy isn't consistantly inforced, and that it's taken a year for someone to tell me I couldn't bring in food from an outside vendor. Sorry spyhouse, but I don't want to have bakery for dinner, maybe if you had some actual options for food I wouldn't have to bring...

I talk about how great Spyhouse is so much, that my husband told me I should write a review, so here it is:

When I moved to Uptown earlier this year, I tried every coffee shop within a 30 min walking radius from my home and I think Spyhouse Coffee blows the rest out of the water.

I have coffee, decaf, chai, matcha — you name it! — and no matter the drink, Spyhouse is always better. The milk is frothed perfectly (even non-dairy) and I love how their drinks aren't too sweet (so many other places add so much syrup/sugar to their lattes it's a dessert).

Also, it has good vibes. The staff seem like a family.

I won't go anywhere else for my coffee or tea if I can help it. :)

P.S. I went to a local, hip, little coffee shop in Chicago last week and the owner immediately asked me if I went to Spyhouse when he found out I was from Minneapolis. He loves their coffee so much he wants to do a collaboration with them! — More evidence as to how good this...
