After having dined in and ordered online 5 times, I am in a safe spot to write a review.
Visit 1 (On the day of opening). My son ordered pani puri & I ordered potato chilli with Veg Hakka noodles. The server forgot to give us water and the pani puri was so hot that my son was literally crying. The water came in much later. The spice levels in potato chilli and Veg hakka noodles were super high too. I gave them the feedback, but gave them the benefit of doubt given it was their first day in business.
Visit 2 (the very next day). My husband wanted to try their food, so I asked him to get a veg hakka noodles - mild for us. It was anything but mild.
Visit 3 (placed an order over the phone and specifically asked to tone down the spice levels in the veg hakka noodles). It was a bit toned down, but still hot.
Visit 4 (phone order for pickup)- chole kulche- aloo kulche and paneer kulche. I insisted 2-3 times to make it 0 level of spice because I have a 9 year old who would be eating it. When I went to collect it, the food wasn’t ready, so I again asked to make sure that it wasn’t hot. I was told that it was all toned down. When we got down to eat, it was hot as hell 🥵- even the kulche.
Visit 5 (dine in) decided to give them one final try. This time there was a hispanic waitress. Told her to specifically tell the chef 0 spice level. Ordered sweet corn soup, veg momos, chaat papdi and chole bhature. The waitress came back to say that the soup is not in season. I mean this is the season of corn! So I asked for another soup. Then the Indian lady came up to say that soup will be available during winters! Why have it on a summer menu then?!! Next the veg momos were sold out. Chaat papdi was level 10 spicy. My son spilled his water and he could not tolerate the spice level. No one ever came back for refills. Chole was toned down a lot more than in the past, but bhature weren’t puffy. The seating just kept us exposed to seeing the restroom each time someone wanted to use it.
I am a north Indian who likes hot food. I also cook regularly enough to know that hotness level can definitely be adjusted in Indian cooking. If a restaurant in business cannot cater to these basic fundamentals, this place...
Read moreFlavors of India - the newest Indian restaurant in the town. They’ve got a wide menu of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes to order from and will have South Indian dishes being served from August 1 as well.
Overall, our experience at flavors of India was, to sum it up in one word, Decent. The service was pretty good and quick, considering that the restaurant was more than 50% occupied.
The chicken 65 was delicious and packed with spice and flavor. The chicken tikka presentation was amazing, like that of a sizzler, but the taste and texture could be improved upon, it was overcooked and the flavor was not up to point. The mango lassi was a little heavy on cardamom, but still delicious! On the other hand, the coffee was more like Horlicks rather than the coffee flavor.
We got the Rogan Josh and Kadai chicken (served with rice) and garlic naan for our main course, they all both pretty alright but nothing to rave about. That said, the quantity was on the lower end.
The restaurant opened very recently so they do have scope for improvement. The pricing of the dishes was also a little weird considering that the appetizers we ordered were either the same cost or more expensive than the main course. Also, the quantity of the main course was not that great. They should either increase the quantity for the price quoted or decrease the price and keep the quantity same. The ambience also leaves something to be desired because it feels very random and the dining room is weirdly laid out.
Will I be returning? Maybe, but only to try the chicken 65, mango lassi or something new. Among the three Indian restaurants in the South Bend Mishawaka region I rate this the...
Read moreI'm going to skip over the cheesy decore, the slow service and lack of items available that are on the menu and told we can't order. We ordered the Veg Tahli and non Veg Tahli to get a sample of more items. First off the drink we ordered was unavailable. Then the entrees came out, waited 10 more min after that for the yogurt sauce to come out. Here's a piece of advise as I've worked an ran restaurants for almost 25 yrs, don't bring food out to customers unless it is ready. As we sat there, food getting cold waiting for the sauce. When we finally started eating the food was OK at best, my non veg tahli had 2 chicken dished and rice, Some naan and yogurt sauce. We normally go to India Gardens, where I get a lamb curry, masala, lentils, tandoori chicken and rice oh and a coffee or tea and naan all on the same non Veg tahli dish. For the same $21.99 price tag. As well the Veg tahli comes with samosas and lentil which did not come on ours here. Also the flavors are much more prolific at India Gardens. One last thing that stood out to me was it didn't smell like food when we walked into the restaurant. When we walk into India Gardens just down the road a bit, it smells of curry and seasonings that have been cooking all day so you know it's fresh!! As a chef myself I recommend India Gardens as the best Indian...
