I took myself out to dinner so that I could scout Zing for future gatherings. I was struck by how small the dining room is, even though it is fresh and pleasant, and there is a sizable outdoor seating area. I wouldn't call it elegant, but it truly has the feel of an independent restaurant, and I liked that. I was seated quickly and courteously, and got quick and polite service for a starting cocktail. I wasn't thrilled with the Sake-tini, but it came in a PINT GLASS! (!) It lasted me the whole meal. But what was truly special, and what deserves the 5-stars rating is the food! I started with a vegetarian dish, the Bean Curd Country Style. You know when you bight into something, and you know it's farm-fresh? All of the vegetables tasted firm and flavorful like they were picked yesterday. Marvelous! They were perfectly cooked, and the sauce was excellent. I could have eaten this all day! I admit I was afraid to order it with the fried rice, because I didn't was the same old yellow, take-out restaurant rice, but I did and was pleasantly rewarded. The rice was soft and fresh, like it was fried minutes ago, brown like it would naturally be after a sautéing. I was so thrilled with the flavors that I asked for a to-go container so that I could box half, and save room to try the sushi, which is a big part of their menu. I then ordered tuna, yellow-tail and roe sushi ala carte. The same freshness applied to everything on the sushi plate, right down to the pickled ginger, which was beige, not pink like it had been pickling a while, supple but with a firmness that I have rarely experienced in any sushi restaurant. The sushi was well done and fresh, and I enjoyed everything ever so much. I will absolutely take people here as a casual dining experience in a small, somewhat quirky environment for an excellent dining experience. This will be one of those hole-in-the-wall gems that I will feel great about enlightening...
Read moreI am surprised by the amount of 5 start reviews. We had good service. Our server was nice and attentive. New to the area and asked where to get "good" sushi. We tried it. This is not the place. The roll looked small and over sauced. A lot of eel sauce and whatever other orangy colored sauce on the top.
We were served our food at different times. His appetizer came out and when he was almost done, mine came out. His sushi roll came out before my meal. I told him to start so the crunchy stuff on the top stayed that way. My meal came out. I got Mongolian beef. While the sauce was tasty, very little pieces of beef with so much onion. It should have been called Mongolian onion dish.
The place is absolutely filthy. The menus were dirty--every page. My husband wanted to leave and I said maybe the food will make up for as the women who told us about it said the food was incredible. The food is fair, at best. Before we left I went to wash my hands and use the bathroom before our 1 hour plus trip. The floor all around the toilet was wet, rusty toilet. The toilet filled with water and over flowed a bit when flushed. Felt like an old roadside bathroom from a beat up gas station. Once I put my glasses on, I saw the full extent of the dirt everywhere. They need to close their doors for a few days and clean that place top to bottom. We were sitting in front of the wait station and the computer was gross, the wall had their dirty foot prints on it. Floor was gross. The waitress kept touching her face and hair. The guys making the sushi continually touched his face, hair, scratched his nose. We were too grossed out, we will go to Chicago for sushi from now on. What a gross establishment. I could not attached photos due to the size of the pictures. What a waste of $73....
Read moreI had the absolute pleasure of going here recently and it was incredible, the wait staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, the service was quick, and the food was very tasty!
When I first walked in, I was hit with an emanating aroma that could only be described as "fresh". And then I noticed that the inside was a bit quaint due to limited seating and overall real estate for tables. Despite this fact, however, I found that the environment was still pretty quiet, and it was difficult to hear other people even though everyone is pretty close together. They do a really good job of creating a personalized atmosphere so that it doesn't feel like you're on top of everyone. The restaurant was basically packed when I arrived, and none of it ever felt like a "squeeze".
I got the California Roll and Crab Rangoon and I found both of them to be very delicious. Notably, the sushi was prepared incredibly fast and I had all of my food within 10 mins of ordering (Ordered for two people including myself). As you can tell from the lack of the picture of sushi, I enjoyed it very much lol. I was also quite surprised with how much they were able to pack into each roll, definitely the most packed rolls I've ever had. The Crab Rangoon had a nice breading to it, but if I'm looking for any reason to critique it, it could have been slightly more crispy. I think that the Sweet & Sour sauce that was served with it was fresh and had great flavor.
Lastly, this location is nicely situated mere minutes from the riverfront. I would highly recommend taking a trip over there after coming here, as it is filled with scenic walks and interesting...
