I searched for a place with a patio for the perfect weather. And it was beautiful. The downtown location next to a huge park on the river was perfect! I didn't want to run off to my appointment but instead just relax there for another hour or more. The medium roast coffee with chicory was so nice.
But there was a problem. I got the Mediterranean veggie with Cajun shrimp added. There was nothing about the $4 add-on shrimp that was cajun. It wasn't spicy at all. But the worst of it was the way they put this sandwich together. For a vegetarian sandwich which depends on hummus as the protein, it was a tiny film of hummus that was barely detectable. Because of this the sandwich was overwhelmed with bread. And worst of it was the huge chunks of cheese. It seems to have come from a tube of mozzarella about 1 1/4" in diameter. The the two slices on the sandwich was actually as much as a half inch thick!! On what planet would that be okay? I just imagine some cheese lover back there making the sandwiches and has no concept of what should make sense universally. I want to say so much more about how ridiculous that sandwich was. At least I ate it. The person I was with who had the exact same sandwich spent time picking through it before actually getting it down. It would be so simple and cost nothing extra to just make it right. If you think it needs a little extra cheese that would have been fine but just sprinkled all over, not in massive chunks. If it's a vegetarian sandwich with hummus, it needs to have a reasonable amount, and it needs to be great. It was such a letdown after such a great impression from the location, patio, great coffee and cleanliness.
Oh! About the patio. You don't have a great patio without umbrellas at each table! We were just fortunate to find a table with an umbrella.
Chicory Cafe....you are so close. It will only take tiny adjustments for you to be the absolute best...
Read moreWe had a high school reunion in their event Center. Everything was very nicely set up. Unfortunately, they burned our pans of lasagna. There was about 4 in of black, charred, hard lasagna all around the edges of lasagna pans. That was over half of the lasagna in each pan that was burnt! The middle of each was scorched but not totally black like the edges. When the young man tried to serve me a piece of that nasty stuff, I refused it and said that I would take a piece out of the middle that wasn't so burnt. I wasn't on the reunion committee this year, but had I been, I would have been asking for a refund for those burnt lasagnas. The committee had a cake brought in that was pre-cut and we were serving ourselves. This woman, (head of catering?) came and practically grabbed it away from us saying she would cut it. I told her it's already precut and she made some kind of rude remark and took it anyway. We had a couple other issues with the catering and when we were talking to somebody on the committee about it they said they didn't want to deal with that woman either!! WOW! Sounds to me like The Chicory Cafe needs to find another person to head up their catering staff. This woman was rude, arrogant and hostile. It sounds like she needs to pursue another life choice because she she certainly shouldn't be working with people. For the serving staff to try to serve people burnt pieces of hardened lasagna is unexcusable. Some of the wait staff was removing our food from the table before we were even finished! Two ladies at our table were still eating their salads along with their meal when the wait staff just swooped in and grabbed them off the table! They didn't even bother to ask first!!!! RUDE WAIT STAFF! RUDE CATERING STAFF!!! If you're planning on having an event at The Chicory Cafe event Center, you better give it a lot of thought because the service staff...
Read moreI have been to New Orleans multiple times and have experienced real Cajun food. This is not it! I had a shrimp po'boy and an order of beignets with a "New Orleans" coffee. First off, when you order a po'boy in New Orleans, they PILE on the seafood, topping it off with heaps of shredded lettuce and tomato slices. Here they give you a sad little hoagie bun (about half the size of the real thing) with a single row of shrimp lined up on a leaf of lettuce and covered with small tomato slices and onions. NEVER onions on an authentic po'boy! They were immediately thrown to the side. The one positive was the remolade sauce, which was decent. The beignets were a total joke! Instead of fluffy, light pillows of goodness smothered in powdered sugar, they were flat, dense, crispy wedges of something resembling bread dough. And the skimpy amount of powdered sugar used would make a true Cajun cry! The famous Cafe DuMonde in New Orleans has a powdered sugar canister at the table, so if you think the inch thick layer of powdered sugar isn't quite enough, then you are welcome to add more! The "New Orleans" coffee was overly sweet. Did not have the classic Cafe au lait flavor, which is not pre-sweetened at all. Overall, Chicory Cafe was a real disappointment. The food was passable, but not great. I...
