This fall I decided to kick off a new adventure I’m calling Camaro & Coffee—a tour of unique Kansas City coffee shops with my 1968 Camaro as the trusty sidekick. This morning’s stop was Urban Prairie Coffee, and right at 7:00 AM the place was buzzing with energy as people lined up for specialty drinks and an impressive spread of pastries—including their own spin on Pop-Tarts. I stuck with my go-to dark roast (with a splash of half & half) and wasn’t disappointed. One of the best surprises? Urban Prairie is connected to a board game shop, which instantly earned it a spot on my “return visit” list—next time I’ll be bringing the family to dive into both the coffee and the games. All in all, it’s a unique and cozy spot that blends great coffee, fun treats, and a welcoming vibe—exactly the kind of place this Camaro & Coffee journey is all about.

This is a charming little spot on Johnson Drive, and I would come here more often if I spent more time in this part of the world. I was here between appointments, riding out a rain storm, so I just got a chai and enjoyed the quiet for awhile. Indeed, the dining area off to the side was so quiet that we felt the need to whisper in order to avoid disturbing the people concentrating on drawing, writing and the like. So that part of the place might be better suited for people on their own rather than folks who want to have a conversation. The coffee shop also shares an interior door with Mission Board games, so if you want a good beverage and some tabletop fun, you're definitely in the right place.

To be upfront... My mom said I should never use the word "hate." So, I "severely dislike" coffee. But I love this cafe! I never would have thought to stop in if not for being next door at Mission: Board Game and wanting a snack. The door is open between the two, and they make for a great combination. Even though board games drew me in the first time, I will certainly be back for the grinds (aka food). The "farm-to-table" ingredients are every bit as tasty as you'd hope. The sandwiches and breakfast items we ate were masterfully prepared, and the ones in the case that we haven't yet tried look just as delicious. Finally, the prices were perfectly reasonable.

I’ve been here multiple times and always had good experiences until today. If today had been my first experience I would never return, not sure at this point. I order coffee and a piece of quiche. I stood at the counter for a full 10 minutes while the young man helping me was “heating my quiche” while actually chatting up a coworker. After 10 minutes I asked if it was okay to go sit outside while I waited. After another more than five minutes he came out with my very cold quiche. I asked him to heat it, he agreed and returned with it looking extremely rough, clearly something happened to it. When I objected he insisted I try it and said if I didn’t like it the way it is that he would get a new piece for me and “heat it in the good toaster oven.’ What? Why didn’t I get it heated the better way from the beginning? $5.75 for a very small piece of quiche that I waited almost half an hour to not eat. Would have given one star if I hadn’t been here so many times in the past. Maybe it’s...

Urban Prairie has been my neighborhood coffee shop for quite some time and has continued to be the 'go-to' mostly because of the excellent environment and pleasantness of the entire staff. Once every few months a friend and I get together here to catch up over a drink and pastry from the case.

Usually go with a standard latte or one of their rotating specialty drinks that come-and-go from month to month. This day in age coffee is incredibly subjective but virtually any place is willing to craft a drink to your liking. UPC is one of those places. As someone to loves creative specialty drinks, they are often too sweet for me and mask the coffee taste I enjoy (yes, even the more bitter varieties) so I typically request for them to be made half-sweet.

Hands down on of my favorite spots to grab a drink to go, or relax with friends or the spouse.

PS - also a great place to enjoy the outside seating with your dog (or dog watch if you don't...
