Size does matter!
On a road trip from FL back to CA. Stopped in Mobile for the night, went to Aztecas as it was walking distance from our motel. Photos below show a steak chimichanga and a shrimp (street?) taco. The chimi was literally the size of a mass-produced supermarket burrito (the frozen kind, about 6" long, maybe 1.5" thick) and contained just some chunks of thin beef. It did come with a side of refried beans (I asked for no rice, but extra beans, I think they forgot the 'extra' part. No other filling, no beans or rice or anything else inside. The taco was 4 boiled shrimp, lettuce, some shredded jack cheese, a couple of chunks of tomato and a dab of sour cream. No cliantro, no Mexican queso and no flavor.
My son ordered a 'burrito special's with steak, which was identical to my chimi, just not fried. No rice/beans/lettuce/salsa inside. Literally chunks of beef wrapped in a tortilla.
I understand different areas have different interpretations of ethnic food, but I have never been to a Mexican restaurant that served poor quality food like this It was highly disappointing, especially given the cost of the meal was $35.50 before tax. We ordered to-go and paid before receiving our meal and it wasn't until getting back to our hotel that I saw how disappointing the food was.
For comparison, most Mexican restaurants where we live serve burritos that are easily 8" long and the diameter of a soda can, if not bigger. Stuffed with lettuce, rice, beans, pico de gallo and sour cream, served with more rice and beans, they're definitely a full meal. Cost is about $15. A shrimp taco would be grilled or sauteed shrimp, crumbled queso, a generous pile of diced cilantro and onion served on a corn tortilla, about $3. The 'interpretation' I got was $4.50.
My meal from Aztecas left me thinking I had just ordered a couple of appetizers. I'm still pretty hungry. We would have gotten better food...
Read moreI dined in at Aztecas Restaurant & Cantina with my family on a Saturday afternoon, since my brother in law recommended it and we were passing through Mobile, AL for our weekend trip to Mississippi. There was a homeless woman in the parking lot waiting for guests to get out of their cars to ask for money. This made us feel a bit uncomfortable for safety reasons, while also empathetic for the lady.
When we made it to the patio, I loved the decor and noticed that they had a lot of weekly specials (drinks and tacos etc.) Unfortunately, there was a faint sour mop water smell upon entry of the restaurant. We sat in the back near the restrooms and the bar. Our server was friendly, but forgot a few things. For example, I ordered a Victoria chicken bowl with no black beans (because black beans + long car ride = no buena). When my entree came out it had black beans on it. It was pretty flavorful though & I was surprised that the bowl had spring mix instead of romaine or iceberg lettuce. I also ordered a birria taco and it was disappointing. I would not recommend the birria here. The outer shell was stale and the meat was tough and lacking salt. The dipping sauce was great. My son ordered buffalo wings and they were HUGE! He enjoyed them a lot. My other relatives seemed to enjoy their food, although hubby was also unimpressed with the birria tacos too.
My son had to use the restroom when the server requested our payments for our checks, so I forgot to use my Yelp check in offer. I share that so you know that you may be able to get a 10% discount on your first visit when you check in on Yelp. By the time I returned to from the restroom, it was too late to use the offer because the checks were printed. Overall, the experience served it's purpose, but I would not rush back...
Read morePeople think this is Mexican? The margaritas are great but the food is terrible. I've never had fajita' s with bar b q sauce and with the fajitas for 2 we only got 3 tortilla, I kept having to ask for more tortillas the service was terrible but who ever made the margaritas did good but are waiter was terrible. The only good Mexican restaurant that I've found so far in Alabama is Chuy's in Tuscaloosa. I don't recommend this restaurant for Mexican food. Even Mexican restaurants up north don't serve fajitas with bar b q sauce with only 3 tortilla's. I will not be returning to this restaurant I would much rather make a 3hour drive to a Mexican restaurant vs to come here. I'm from Texas the deep southern part of Texas I know my Mexican food and this is not it. The closest I can get is Chuy's in Tuscaloosa, Alabama unless I go to my hometown or cook it my self and the fajita meat wasn't even real fajita meat it was like a sirloin that was chopped up it was very tuff not tender and the chicken was over cooked and the rice wasn't authentic Mexican rice and I love Mexican rice and I didn't even touch it. I can go on and on with everything that I found wrong with this place but there probly going to cover this review up with a lot of fake views but be warned if you read this review. This place would be great to eat if your already drunk or looking to get drunk. But not sober I had to get a margarita to put chill myself out so I wouldn't embarrass my wife by going off on the owner like I...
