El Gallo Mexican Cuisine — Restaurant in Monona

Food was excellent, I had the Tacos Birria, the Birria was incredibly moist and had a great taste! Would highly recommend them. We went on a Saturday evening around 6:30PM and had immediate service. HOWEVER, upon immediately entering the establishment we were solicited by a sales person from Mary Kay to sign up and potentially receive free skin care products (no thank you). Then after our meal we were approached by an individual holding a stack of roses, they did not speak to us, handed several roses to our female patrons and then proceeded to hand us a card giving a sob story about him and his family. At the end of the card it asked us to give him money- and there it is. I do not appreciate being solicited before dinner and during dinner.

I won’t return nor recommend. Ordered a burrito Monterrey and it was just basic - guacamole tasted like it was premade from the grocery, steak was chewy and it was cold. My husband ordered a burrito fajitas. He asked for no crema and no cheese sauce on top but it arrived swimming in cheese sauce - like bowl of soup swimming. Very busy and minimal staff. The staff were friendly. Took forever to get our check (writing this as I was). House margarita was basic and tasted like a buy off the shelf mix. Many other Mexican restaurants around Madison area that have food with lots more flavor and way better margaritas! Changed my rating from 2 to 1 star. Waited 15-20 minutes after my plate was cleared to have to go and ask someone for our check. A lady at the table next to us said her food was super salty and she thought she found a bone...

This place should be rated 4.5 stars. Went last night with a party of 6 and all the food and drinks were spot on and very tasty, large portions too. Everyone really enjoyed their meals and it came out in a reasonable time. Very friendly service. They are also using a robot to bring food to the table where it’s unloaded by any nearby server. It’s kind of cool and fun to watch it in the mix. It’s a big place so hard to imagine not getting seated quickly most of the time. The owner came out to check on us and say hello which was nice too.
