I've read the reviews that say the food is great and all is wonderful at Taipei in Monroeville. I would never believe that any of these reviews are written by patrons who dined there when Bruce and Heather owned the place. I was a regular at Taipei in Monroeville at least twice a week starting in 2009 until they sold to these new owners. Bruce, Heather and their staff were very welcoming and everything on the menu was delicious. Everyone was greeted at the door by name. Yes Bruce, Heather and the staff knew everyone's name. But more important is that I would order a sushi roll called crystal. Don't laugh but I had them cook it. Bruce and Heather's staff never questioned or gave me a problem about this. The house salad with ginger dressing was something I ordered just for the ginger dressing. Anyway,. I knew that all of the previous staff had left when I went there hoping it was the same. Unfortunately it's not at all. They're cold and very impersonal. But I can get past that if the food was the same. It's not. First issue was that when I ordered my crystal cooked the staff was rude and assumed that I needed to be educated on what crystal is. She insisted that I couldn't get it cooked. So I spoke to a manager who was also rude and assumed that he needed to educate me as well. So I got my crystal cooked and it was ok. However, the house salad with ginger dressing had no flavor at all. The egg rolls were little skinny things like spring rolls and the fried rice was bland. That might not sound too bad to many people. But as I said in the beginning, I can't imagine that people who were patrons at Taipei when Bruce and Heather owned it would still be eating there thinking the food is great because it's not. And, the staff's manors leave a lot to be desired. I'll never...
Read moreI need to add to this review. Inspired by a friend, my Tuesday dining companion and I went to our favorite sushi place. Now, two/three weeks ago we tried an all you can eat place that just opened up. A fairly high end one. There were 4 of us and all of us left unsatisfied. The quality there and presentation and heck, the whole dining experience was just off enough that we'll not go back. So, back to our usual place and boy, were they on point with the meal. Not only was the fish super fresh, everything was just right. Now, I suspect they went a little above and beyond tonight because I told them about the other place, but this place is consistently excellent. So, without further ado, I present our Dinner. On the large plate going clockwise, we start with tuna sashimi, salmon sashimi, sex on the beach, Monroeville roll, Pittsburgh roll, eel roll, spicy tuna roll, and in the center tamago sashimi. The upper left had some lovely orange pieces in a cute basket and everything was presented beautifully. The second plate is one of their signature dishes called a Pink Lady Roll. The special sauce is a mix of spicy mayo and eel sauce and something else we cannot figure out. It's spectacular.
(three years ago) Excellent as always. Being very diligent in keeping stuff sanitized. Sushi was, as always,...
Read moreI bought take out from this place on February 5th and brought it back shortly after I discovered there were not one, but several pieces of hair in the breading of my sweet and sour chicken. Although i was honestly disgusted and hadn't eaten any of my meal, i didn't want to cause a scene or embarrass anyone but did want to call attention to the situation. I brought the dish back to the restaurant, and inform the person at the front desk what had happened. The person alerted the owner who came to speak with me, he first denied there was any hair there and quite rudly in an angry tone asked me to come over to show him where exactly these hairs were. After showing him the concrete evidence of the hairs, he offered no apologies or explanation only asked me so what do you want your money back or do you want me to cook another one for you? Obviously he totally missed the point that this was not hygienic and disgusting. Of course I don't want another dish, and of course you are obligated to give me my money back, the point of it was you should be apologetic, say sorry for such unfortunate occurrence, and promise that you will fix the problem whatever it is so that doesn't happen to another patron. Taipei Tokyo you failed, you...
