Surprising find of this Yunnan restaurant in San Gabriel. This restaurant specializes in round rice noodle soup. All noodle dishes made up of rice noodle and fillings. There are spicy ones and non spicy options.
The house special rice noodle was what we had for lunch. The bowl was huge and we shared among three of us. The broth was clear and delicious. The noodle were soft and chewy. We also ordered the spicy beef rice noodle as well. Unlike the taiwanese version of the spicy beef noodle, the broth was not that spicy and the beef was more bland than the heavily marinated beef in the Taiwanese noodle.
In addition to Yunnan style rice noodles, they also offer dumplings, potstickers and scallion pancakes. These are all good and tasty. I think the chef is from Northern China where the cuisine emphases spiciness and heavy sauce.
The best dish we had was their sautéed egg plant with garlic. They don't use a lot of oil to cook the egg plant but the dish is very flavorful and tasty.
The restaurant also offers ready made to go cold dishes that include vegetables and snack foods such chili oil pig ear, chicken feet, spicy beef and tripes. For three items, they can choose any of them on display and pay only$8.99.
We also got a bag of frozen potsticker to go after lunch.
The service was very good and our server was very friendly. She speaks both mandarin and Cantonese.
The decor is more of old school as there is not much. Parking can be challenging as the 168 super market takes up most of the...
Read morethe food is good but service is another story, I purchased 2 orders and take out. at the time I was taking the food and leaving the restaurant, the waitress suddenly said 'wait'. then I turn around and responded her, and one order drop on floor.
That's very common and I don't think it is a big deal, and the waitress asked if I want another one. I said okay and another waitress clean up. when I take out the remake order and prepare to leave, the waitress requested another payment and keep saying its my mistake because I let the food drop down so that I have to pay another order (in chinese)
I am very disappointed their service. As the fact showed, I already left the restaurant if the waitress did not stop me. the Food drop, ok, I might choose accept the food and leave if she did not suggested remake the order to me, or if she suggested to remake for 2nd order and charge on bill. However, after the order remake and my old order in trash, they requested my second payment.
I just feel it is a trap. The waitress suggested to remake so that she does not have to responsible for her liability (sudden 'wait). and the second waitress clean up so that I can't make another choice and accept the 2nd bill (Don't forget I order to go and can't leave without food for tonight...
Read moreThis restaurant is, undoubtedly, the golden standard of Szechuan cuisine. The food is absolutely incredible and provides a wide array of flavors. The service is wonderfully accommodating and welcomed our eight-person party without hesitation. It truly pains me to see the entirely unreasonable complaints in the comments regarding people’s tipping preferences and food complaints that are based on personal preferences rather than objective facts. One’s lack of a well-seasoned palette is an unjustified excuse to disrespect the name of such a wonderful restaurant that is the product of years of passionate labor. Shame befalls any such protestants. For example, @MAYA SWEENEY, many Szechuan appetizers are intended to be served cold, the fault does not lie on the restaurant for cooking in a traditional and objectively skillful manner, but rather on your lack of knowledge regarding the intricacies of Szechuan cuisine. To conclude, Yunnan Restaurant shines as a pillar of what homestyle cooking, regardless of cuisine, should be, and ought to be applauded rather than disrespected for their overwhelming passion and dedication to...
