I'm all for patronizing local businesses. Typically, despite the wait time, Simply Southern food is a guaranteed hit for soul food on Sundays, but lately the food and the customer service level has been a hit or miss. After ordering two ox-tail plates, I reached out to them because the dish was too salty. I was asked to bring the plates back. After driving 20mins back to the restaurant, I was told that unfortunately they would only be able to replace 1 plate...but you took both plates to the back out of my view and think I'm about to eat off of it....nah! Then the replacement meat was smaller than the original. So, who is giving me money back for this gas I wasted?! Proper customer service is a must! If anything, I would have expected an apology for the error and a new equivalent plate versus "oh you ate off of this...so i can't replace it, but I can give you a credit on the sides". Despite more than half of the meal still being on the plate....yeah, I'm good! Definitely not bashing the establishment, because I have ordered here several times, but I will say taste your food before you leave, but don't taste too much..🥴 I would hate for your return to be denied!

Montgomery Alabama Great start of the day with a great Southern meal with Simply Southern Cafe. A simple cafe run by people who loved to feed people with their good Southern food. It is cafeteria style run with set meals & prices attached. It appears that they have different meals each day. As you enter, the menu board reflects the daily specials of the day. We had oxtail stew with 3 sides. The stew was served on rice, for sides we had the green beans ( yummy), corn pudding (it was packed with corn & delicious), yam (it was cooked in brown sugar, quite sweet but oh soo.. yummy) served with corn bread or roll. We opted for the corn bread. We had the pork chop & fried chicken meal. The pork chop was coated with a dry rub & a light coating, you can taste garlic & onion taste to the fried pork chops. Their fried chicken was outstanding, crispy in the outside & so moist on the inside even chicken breast which is challenging to deep fry while keeping the inside moist. We also had Mac & Cheese as one of the sides, one of the best we had.. real cheddar cheese on the Mac. A most enjoyable Southern meal!

The food was great, the service was ok, and the atmosphere was pure chaos. This is not a dine in restaurant its pick up only. Being a visitor in the area you walk in and you have no idea which way to go, how to go about ordering, you simply become a robot and get in line and wait your turn. There is no restaurant professionalism, simply "next, light or dark, gravy, what sides... next. " There was a disruption that caused some alarm between a customer and staff member, which caused the entire staff in the back to come out front. This made for a run or look for cover situation, but they did have security to remove the problem. I'm not sure how long they have been in business, but there is a lot of work to be done. This gives literally mean to "hole in the wall" as there is a plexiglass cut-out where front staff speaks with kitchen staff. All restaurant supplies are stored out front in the open. The food is delicious, real home cooking, but you've got to get past and overlook the rest to enjoy the experience of the good foodand it is good food.

Great place. I would of scored higher if they put more of their money into the actual design of the restaurant. They are always packed but the inside of the restaurant is not as pleasant. The servers are AWESOME!!! I didn't like that I saw about 4-5 people trip over uneven floors. There is a stage in the restaurant that looks like a hut. They should decorate it and then red rope it off or something. They should even open later and have someone do live music on the stage. Part of the restaurant is closed off, so there is limited seating. It's definitely not inviting enough to make you even want to sit down. The warmers for the food is a small warmer in the floor of the restaurant. You make a huge line around the restaurant and wait your turn to be served. It's definitely not put together right. A lot of money needs to go back into the esthetic, and rotation of the restaurant. I think our black owned businesses should invest back into the people who make them who they are. We want nice seating areas, clean even floors, and not to be served like we are entering a soup kitchen instead of a paying restaurant. Like I said the people are tremendously nice, TREMENDOUSLY WARM AND WELCOMING. The business, restaurant itself, needs work. The outside of the building is nice but the parking lot if horrible. Huge pot holes that can be easily fixed with a little cement. The money we spend to support this business needs to be put back into the development of the restaurant. This is a tenured business, it should be better and look...

I didn't have a good experience coming to this place. It came highly recommended by hotel staff so we took a chance. I wish we wouldn't have. The portions were terrible for the price. The fish was so hard i thought i was eating fish cracklings. I asked for sweet potatoes and string beans. A and a roll. One chicken wing was $3.00 and two drinks. My total was $26.00 and some change. They gave me a piece of sweet potato, and a half a spoon of string green beans. I don't eat a lot and i was still hungry. I do not recommend this over priced place. The staff was not pleasant at all i assume its not a good place to work. A lady from the kitchen came out to give me a piece of foil, that they didn't have. There is no reason that they can give that would justify the serving sizes. I ran a business where i served food for four years. If you can't give people a healthy serving then you need to raise prices i expect better servings considering that both tasted as though they were from the can. This type of service is why people of color never raise to the top. Poor service, poor quality food, over priced. Lets do better. Lastly this place looked like it was pieced together the chairs were tattered and torn. The serving area was no better the silverware was not protected. They were wrapped in paper towel. Im not sure who put this place together but they need to close and hire someone to help with the presentation....

Not only is service slow, but the employees have no sense of urgency. The lady that puts the meat on your plate is rude. If you have a modification they roll their eyes or huff and puff. When they run out of an item they scoot you to the side indefinitely with no continuing reassurance that what you're waiting for is being prepared as quickly as possible. The manager is rude not only to customers but to her staff as well. They have two cash registers its rate that they are both open. Your approximate wait time is typically going to be your entire lunch break. I've been going here for a year now and nothing's changed since. The three stars are simply for the good food they have. I suggest treating customers like customers and not like figures. True you're gonna make the money regardless. But I hate to come in and feel like this. Also found a piece of steel wool in my cabbages. UPDATE Some time had passed since my last rating. Food is still good, service is still slow, and there's still some rudeness in the tone of 1 of the staff. The problem is, she has to interact with EVERY guest. They're in desperate need of a kitchen manager!!! They keep running out of food!!! It was like that when I last rated this establishment. This one's free: Cook your dressing in pans that are 9X6 and maybe an inch deep. Get you a CVAP. Problem solved, well that problem. The system is broken, y'all need a consultant....
