A&J Bagels — Restaurant in Montvale

DIRTY BAGELS?? I have been a near daily customer of this bagel shop since the change in ownership 3 or so years ago. The bagels and coffee have been among the best in the area and with the owner and often his family working there I have been supportive through the pandemic. Unfortunately the cleanliness of the display cases, food preparation areas and coffee station have shown a lack of daily care and attention in recent months. The same crumbs and droppings from food and bagels can be seen in the bottom of the display areas day after day. They clearly don’t empty and clean these cases as should be done. On Friday I came in for my morning coffee and while waiting at the register I observed the owner transferring the bagels from the oven to the display baskets in the back kitchen area. One of the bagels fell to the dirty kitchen floor and I watched as the owner picked it up and rather than discarding, placed it back in the basket of bagels that were to be sold. I made mention of this observation to the sandwich maker and he said nothing. I will never step foot into a food establishment where the owner himself puts the cost of one bagel (perhaps 10 cents to make) over the health of his customers. This type of behavior can not be condoned or supported. I will sooner travel further to frequent Stein’s, John’s or Goldberg’s for my morning coffee. The owner should...

This past Saturday, A&J prepared and delivered a beautiful continental breakfast and 2 separate lunch platters to the Hilton where we were staying for our daughter's wedding. My daughter's stepmom and I sat with Antoinette the Tuesday before the wedding. She so helpful and accommodating, making the ordering process the easiest thing we did that week (we did a lot!). On Saturday, the food was delivered on time to the right suites. There was very little left over - several members of the bridal party let us know how much they enjoyed the selection of speciality wraps. I would definitely recommend A&J to anyone looking to feed a wedding party staying at the Hilton, or for lunch for that matter, as we ate there twice in our travels to the area. . The staff was all exceptionally nice and helpful.. from the moment we walked in the door very friendly and welcoming. Huge selection of bagels even on Saturday afternoon. Bagels were a little basic looking but once it was extra toasted with toppings it was awesome. Great crunch outside while still soft inside. The coffee was a little"weak" in my opinion so definitely go for the dark roast as it had better coffee kick. And definitely needs more seeds on bagels. One of the sesame was almost bare.. Very reasonable price about $5-10 per person. Overall will definitely return when I'm in the area and would definitely recommend for a good bagel breakfast.
