We went for the dim sum experience and it was great. The place has plenty of parking, we were seated quickly and the booth was comfortable. You get a dim sum card to check off your selections and then hand it in. We got mai-tai's and they were just OK...I've had better, and my search for the perfect mai-tai in Ct will continue. Back to the dim-sum. The whole experience is basically to place an order quickly and get served your food quickly...like if you only had 30 minutes for lunch then dim-sum is for you. If you want to have a relaxed laid back dinner then the dim-sum experience is not for you.
For a late lunch/early dinner, we ordered the steamed shrimp dumplings-$5.50, the Roast Pork Buns-$4.75, the Shrimp/Chicken/Pork fried rice-$11.95 and the Chicken thin egg noodles-$15.95
The steamed shrimp were basically a few small shrimp steamed in translucent spring roll wrappers and they were a hit. Not really seasoned, just plain and delicious. Drizzle on a bit of soy sauce and they are even better.
The pork buns were hot and right out of the oven. They served 3 fist sized buns that were lightly glazed with a sweet brushing and not overly stuffed with a pork mixture on the inside. They were great, not too sweet, (just slightly) and not heavy. Could have been stuffed with another teaspoon of filling, but they were good as they were.
The fried rice was fantastic. What a great combo of flavors. The rice was cooked as it should be, not sticky at all and there was plenty of shrimp, chicken and pork and veggies to strike a nice balance of flavors.
The noodles were served as a brown chicken infused gravy poured over crispy noodles. Letting this dish sit for a moment allowed the gravy to soften up the noodles and make them pliable. The gravy was really good and while we ate everything else we were served, we just couldn't finish the noodles so we took them home and they were still delicious 2-3 days later.
All in all in you go for dim-sum you will feel like you are being rushed, because you are...that's the thing. So go with it and enjoy your expedited experience. The food is great and the service is...
Read moreIf, like many people, you have driven by this unassuming restaurant tucked underneath the highway dozens of times without a second glance, then stop, turn around, and check the Golden Palace out. This is, by far, the freshest, highest quality, and most deliciously prepared Chinese food that you will find in Groton, in a fifty mile radius, perhaps in all of Connecticut.
While the owners do have an American style Chinese menu, I would encourage anyone at all interested in food to check out their authentic Chinese menu. While mostly focusing on Cantonese and Sichuan styles, with some Hong Kong and modern influences, the menu is diverse and sophisticated, featuring some of the best classical dishes of Chinese cuisine (their Char Siu Honey Roasted Pork is aromatic, flavorful, moist, and superlative. A must try item.)
I think the key to their success is the focus on detail and high quality of their produce. Even basic garnishes, like bean sprouts, baby corn, or snow peas, are sweet and flavorful, prepared with care and skill, maintaining the natural texture and taste of the ingredients. Do try their Chow Fun noodles (which they offer in several guises, from simply stir fried to smothered in a beef and vegetable sauce), as they are the best I've ever had anywhere: smooth and melt-in-your-mouth while maintaining a pleasantly toothsome springy bite, infused with the subtle but unmistakable taste of expertly wok-fried food. Their Chinese Broccoli, or Jie Lan, is also worth mentioning. Either in garlic sauce or with Chinese ham, this is an excellent dish, worthy of main course status. If you've never had Jie Lan, give it a try, it tastes somewhere between mustard greens, broccoli, and asparagus, and, when so exquisitely prepared, is a feast for the senses.
I must also mention their Dim Sum, which is the best in Connecticut, hands down. It is also extremely affordable, satisfying, and a unique, relaxing dining experience. When the pandemic is over, bring a friend or two, order a selection of dumplings, buns, and...
