Stopped here at this unique place while visiting the area for an event with some time to kill before hand. While not much to look at from the outside, I actually enjoyed my experience here as the small dining area reminded me of someone's kitchen plus the lady here in was very friendly and I felt I was talking with my Mexican grandma rather than an employee. She even came up to my table afterwards to ask if I enjoyed my meal which consisted of a large carne asada burrito that cost me $7 and a large bottle of Coca-Cola that was $2 all payable in cash which is the only form of payment they accept. Sorry no credit or debit cards. You order and pay at the counter. The atmosphere was homey and the burrito, which was on an actual glass plate with a real metal metal fork, was great! While I don't frequent the Moorpark area often. I would definitely return here for some tasty authentic Mexican fare in a genuine atmosphere.

Authentic Oaxacan cuisine that is family owned. You must try the unique HORCHATA drink! It's refreshing for hot days, balanced in sugar (not sugary) and little bits of nuts/melon/scoop of prickly pear. A treat well worth eating at the resturant. Unlike any drink I've had in other Mexican restaurants. I also would recommend the Zapoteco Burrito. It's nurtiously delicious with every bite packed with equal amounts of ingredients from the cheese to the meat to cactus. My partner got the Enchiladas Oaxacanas. He enjoyed the well-made enchiladas with great portions on the chicken and cheese. The salsas, tortillas, rice and beans are made at the resturant as well. You can't go wrong going here for a bite to eat. *Update* Went again but the food was bland. Stick to the basics like burritos. Sadly the tortillas are not handmade and my food did not have salt but my friends plate was very salty.

I don't have a bit of Hispanic heritage in me. But if I did, I have to imagine La Zapoteca would make me feel nostalgic for a family that isn't mine. It's a tiny place. Unassuming. But the food. Oh my, it's made with love. The flavors are deep and complex and rich and salty and spicy and warming. The cafe de olla is maybe the best I've ever had. The salsa macha is perfect (I can't get mine to come out the same at home). Is there better Mexican food in the area? Maybe. It's southern California, we're spoiled with culture. But is there a better restaurant to take a break from the craziness of life and share a meal with family and friends? That, I'm not so sure. La Zapoteca is comfort, pure and simple.

When it comes to a must-try Mexican restaurant in Moorpark, this is it! However, I must admit our first visit the food was a 3.75 star experience. The owner gave us great customer service on our first visit, we placed an order on a food item that had sold out and to make up for the inconvenience she threw in some freebies. We gave this place a second shot and I'm so glad we did. Since then the food has been a 5 star experience. We've tried several food options from their menu: guacamole, salsas, mole, queso birria tacos, chile relleno, tortas, burritos and a fish dish. The portions were generous, ensuring that I had enough to enjoy later. The ambiance is casual, small for large parties with a few tables for parties of 4. Parking lot is small but I always manage to find a...
