This is a small shop with just three tables inside. There is essentially no decor, other than a skinny, wall-mounted tank of goldfish (which are, presumably, not on the menu). The counter is composed of two refrigerated cases, one for raw fish and the other for pies and pastries. The menu is fairly extensive, showing snapper, sole, catfish, and tilapia, among others. Battered and deep fried seems to be the default cooking method for all fish, although you can order your selection to be grilled (which I did) for an additional charge of a dollar -- which the proprietor seemed to discourage. In fact, my decision was so unusual that the cook came out to confirm that I really wanted it grilled. (The menu has many notes indicating that there is an extra charge for this and that.) It looks like the majority of their business is in take out, as my time there saw many people hauling out big orders. It also appeared to me that there is a lot of repeat business because the counter help greeted numerous individuals in a familiar manner. To the food: Most entrees can be ordered in four sizes, with each step up featuring more pieces of fish. I chose the tilapia dinner, the largest portion, composed of five pieces and two sides. The sides menu is pretty large and includes some hard-to-find items, like red beans & rice and collard greens. My fish was tender, if a bit over cooked, and lacking much in the way of seasonings. There was certainly plenty of it. The macaroni salad was plentiful and the portion of onion rings was large. Both sides were quite good. The meal was served in a Styrofoam box, despite the fact I was eating in. It included several wedges of lemons and limes -- plus two sauces. One sauce was a mild tartar with no pickle bits. The other was a red, mildly-hot, watery substance of unknown origin. Overall, the food was good and generous, the service was disinterested, and the ambience was non-existent. I eat fish every Friday so, when I am traveling on business, I seek out local, non-chain fish restaurants like this one. But, I have to say that I would not make the Big Fish Market on Sunnymead a regular stop. While not recommended, you're not likely to leave...
Read moreWorst fish + chips I have ever had!! I ordered $50 worth of a little bit of everything for 3ppl. Never in my life have I thrown away a meal vs. saving the leftovers. The fries were great. The potato salad was good. But the batter for the fish (I got catfish + tilapia) was so overly-seasoned w/pepper + Idk what else that it was disgustingly inedible! The ingredients for the "hush puppies" were indiscernable--& I am not retarded; usually I can discern them well! I do not eat shrimp but the 2 other ppl at my table did not finish the 5 I purchased (normally-sized ones; not jumbo). Allow me to inform you that the cole slaw was wretched! It is not easy to ruin cole slaw--but Big Fish Market did it! Do not eat here UNLESS you purchase the fish raw in order to prepare + to cook it yourself at home, or wherever!
P. S. Their online menu is NOT current as of date posted. This business should + must "get on top" of their...
Read moreFirst time trying this place we found online through Yelp. We ordered online (before 7:30 P.M.) and drove to pick up our order. Once we got there, my wife was told that we should have called ahead since they don't take phone orders after 7:30 P.M. or walk-ins after 7:40 P.M....How are we supposed to know? As we waited for our food we had already paid for, we were told multiple times that next time, we need to call and not use the app since they take 20%..... Poor service, and the food wasn't that great. First and last time we come here. We understand they want to go home, but if they don't customers to order after a certain time then it should be a conversation they need to have with the app service not scold your new customers about it.....secondly if you don't like the app taking a cut to promote your business, then...
