Peking House is such a mixed bag.
As a Morgantown native, I’ve eaten their food since I’ve been a kid, and their decline has become MUCH more notable within these past few years.
For starters, the food in-house versus takeout is completely different. I understand there will be some differences here and there, but the food eaten in-house feels leagues more fresh than to-go. Tonight I ordered the General Chicken and Chicken Fried Rice, and the white rice (which I had asked them to not include despite coming with the General Chicken), was cold and hard. The type of rice you’d expect that would be left out for hours. The breading on the Chicken was falling apart, and it was more onions and peppers than chicken. The Fried Rice was fine, although it just tastes like the white rice with some veggies and soy sauce tossed in.
The service was abhorrent. The service was never something good in the first place (I recall multiple times were the hostess just seemed irritated to even be there), but this time especially was the worst. When I called to place my order, I was immediately met with, “What do you want?”, as if I did something wrong by calling them. No greeting, no polite tone, no nothing. To add insult to injury, the guy scolded me for asking for no white rice, and quite literally hung up at the very end, not giving me a time or anything. I’m almost certain the only reason why his attitude changed when I arrived was because he knew my grandparents extremely well and likely recognized me, but I’ve never gotten worse to-go service ever. It almost seems like they’re somewhat proud of this service though, as there’s a sign featured right before the kitchen that says something to the affect of, “we’re known for warm beer, poor service,” and some third thing I can’t remember. It also doesn’t help that instead of the tv at the bar displaying anything even remotely appropriate for a Chinese restaurant (let alone a restaurant at all), it’s Fox News.
The only upsides here are the prices. I don’t think they’re horrible, but considering the quality and service, you get what you pay for. It’s such a mixed bag, but I couldn’t recommend them over some of the other Chinese...
Read moreThis isn't my first time eating here but it's probably my last. I did a door dash order at 5:03 they accepted it at 5:06 with the expected ready time as 5:25, it wasn't done when I got there which honestly wasn't an issue but the attitude with the front staff was extremely rude. Someone claimed they had been waiting 2 hours for there order (I have no clue if that's accurate or how much food they ordered) but the response to that person was "so?" Front staff bumped into people and just walked through pushing people instead of asking people to move. Door dash people came piling in and she refused to call out names and asked everyone each time for the name of the order she had one and angerly huffed when "no one got the name right." I was about to cancel the order as more and more people complained of their wait time. Somehow though as I was about to cancel mine came out...
The food:
The seafood royal deluxe described shrimp, crab and scallops for the price my expectations was a 5-6 shrimp a couple bay scallops and a piece or 2 of imitation crab. Instead I got 5 shrimp in total no other type of seafood, and mainly cabbage and broccoli the only seasoning I could taste despite it being a sauce was salt. I added several spices at home and it was fine to eat but just not what I was expecting.
The Sweet and Sour pork was chewy only had a few pieces of pepper broccoli and carrot, it was generous on the pork and the sauce was fine.
The cheese wanton was the biggest let down they were barely filled and although chive was noticeable I only got a hint of cream cheese flavor they were very bland and tasted like 0 salt was added.
The shrimp balls to be fair I thought they would be in a soft batter but it was crunchy and overcooked once again little to no salt and they just had a bland flavor with a hint of shrimp on the back end.
It was a highly disappointing meal. I have to say it's the worst Chinese I...
Read moreI don’t typically leave reviews—this might actually be the first one I’ve ever written—but after today, I feel it’s necessary.
My husband and I have been loyal lunch customers of this restaurant for years. It’s always been one of our favorite lunch spots, and the food has consistently been excellent. However, the service has reached a point where it can’t be ignored any longer.
Since COVID, the regular waitress we loved is no longer there, and the owner’s wife has taken over the dining room. Her behavior is, frankly, unbelievable. She slams menus down on the table without a word, stomps around the restaurant, rolls her eyes, huffs and puffs loudly if you make even the smallest request (like asking for broccoli instead of green peppers), and acts like serving you is the biggest inconvenience of her day. She never smiles, never greets you kindly, and never shows even basic manners or courtesy. There’s no sense of hospitality—just visible irritation and complete lack of respect toward paying customers.
We’ve let it go so many times over the years, thinking maybe she was having a bad day, but nothing has changed…Every visit is consistently the same. We always order the same thing—sweet and sour chicken, no green peppers, add broccoli, with wonton soup (not a complex order) —and every time, we’re met with the same attitude.
The food truly is great, and it’s why we kept coming back. But no amount of good food is worth being treated with such blatant disrespect. It's incredibly disappointing, because this used to be a place we looked forward to, after today we will...
