Was visiting family and we wanted to try the local Mexican restaurant with the best reviews. It's worth noting we're from Southern CA and also Mexican. This was not Mexican food. It wasn't even "Tex-Mex" style which is an Americanized version of real authentic Mexican food. The aguas frescas, or "fresh waters" were not it; the jamaica was watered down and tasted more like a berry tea mix than real hibiscus. The chips and salsa were the only good deal. I had the taco sampler and honestly, the only good choice was the chorizo (pork/beef spiced sausage) with the beef asada (skirt steak) being second. The al pastor was OK, though the chunks of pineapple weren't cooked authentically, I could tell they were canned. Don't bother with the carnitas, trust me, it tastes OLD. The carnitas tasted like it was about to turn (spoiled cut of meat) and it was definitely not fresh. The amount of incorrect cheese was the worst part. So many dishes are done with the incorrect cheese; where's the queso fresco, queso seco, oaxaca and panela cheese? All the meals that had cheese on the inside, ALSO had cheese on the outside even when we asked for limited cheese when they told us they use plain white cheddar (could do one better and use mozarella or monterey jack at least). I feel like they cover it in cheese so you don't notice the lack of flavor in the food. The amount of salt, ugh, really salty. The cheeseburger and fries in the kids meal were decently flavored; maybe they should reconsider being a Mexican restaurant. It was a nice touch that they spoke Spanish, we asked about their sauces and cheeses, they knew they didn't use the correct ingredients, just sad we couldn't find a good...
Read moreGreat food. comfortable atmosphere, felt welcomed and appreciated for my patronage of their business. Custom made artsy décor heightened the dining experience., fast service however the wait staff seemed to have slight language barrier communication issues, however the wait staff does actually try to make your visit pleasant and the food is great so you really can't complain. The meats inside my huge burrito was perfectly cooked. rice was excellent so were the beans the chorizo inside was perfectly smoky and spicy ... fresh chips made in house... churros were warm and yummy...
Prices were average, for above average quality, good value. big portions. left full and satisfied with out breaking my wallet.
the décor on the inside was much more enticing than the outside of the building. typical 17th century Spanish look, yet with modern custom hand made art was everywhere. even in the bath room... Hand made iron and colorful glass chandelier was the center piece of the main dining room. really made for a pleasant experience.
this is my 4th visit to this place in about 4 years.... every time the experience was very consistent. One of the top tasting meals you can get in...
Read moreI ordered the beef fajitas, and the steak (which was supposed to be marinated) didn’t have much flavor. The beans and rice were both bland. Overall, after stuffing everything in a tortilla with some salsa, it was good and I would’ve rated it 3 stars but the service was awful.
I didn’t get my tortillas for about 5-10 minutes after my food arrived, and since I like to make little tacos with the steak and veggies, my food was cold before I finally got my tortillas and could start eating. We had to hunt our server down for refills as well as the bill when it came time to pay.
I’m also not sure why they use premade taco shells like you’d find at a Taco Bell, then deep fry them anyway. Is it really that much more effort to make an authentic hardshell taco by frying a corn tortilla??
Maybe I’m spoiled because I grew up in the Southwest where fantastic Mexican food is everywhere, but this fell flat. The icing on the cake was that after I was finished, I noticed that the produce sticker was left on one of my tomatoes which begs the question, did anyone actually wash the produce before they prepped it...
